    We don't NEED it, in the sense that... well lets take Doom III... in the sense that Doom III on Ultra doesn't need it. However you get lots of thrashing of the system RAM as a result (/looks to see where Rys is for his expert insight,) so 512MB will be nice for that and upcoming games.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    We do need it because each stage in the advancement of this technology means that the cards that were at the top, becomes more affordable, which is good, no?

    Well its a bit like cars, do you really need a 320k McLaren SLR that goes to over 300km/h when speed limit is at its highest 130Km/h in europe, and even in germany where you won t gover 230-240 on the autobahn?

    Some will say track days but then you will never reach the max speed of the SLR unless you dont value your life and in terms of sensation there is a vast array of £70k to 100k cars that will give you the same sensation that the SLR will.

    You buy an SLR because you can and you want to show off!!!

    And in the case of a VGA card, technology will catch up and it will be soon when games will require 512mb even if it is not soon enough to justify the premium price, maybe the look of that card through you panel window does.

    I wonder if this will bring down 256mb card prices... These cards might have limited appeal if they come out at a new price high... and the R520 set to emerge in Q2/3... i'm still trying to save up for a GF 6800 GT 256 mb card! Not sure if its worth it now with new cards about 6 months away.

    looking into the past i think its gona be just like the 256 radoen 9800, remember that guys? extra 100 dollars for antoehr 128mb which added .4fps!!! thats almost half a frame! adding more memory doesnt mean better performance it just means its more pricey.
    i wonder if ati learned from the 9800 256, i hope ati tested the x800 if it will get a speed bump from the extra vram

    doom 3 ultra and doom 3 high look the same, only diference is when you magnify something in at least 10x, and playing a fast pace action thriller i dont ahve time to go into such details, and my eyes cant tell the difference, plus i know people who play doom 3 on ultra with stable fps above 25 on a 128mb 6600 gt. so you dont need the 512 to be able to play it.

    This is a simple issue: The latest hardware usually costs way more than the performance increase warrants, the reason being software developers are not going to write a game that runs poorly unless you have 512mb ram, just as they wont write a game that requires Pixel Shader 3.0 support. But that doesnt mean the technology isnt needed. If we all took that attitude we would all still have the 486 25mhz 4mb ram!!!

    But Id still rather spend my money on 32 pixel pipelines instead of 512mb ram!

    Just another case for the sloppy programmers IMHO, "Bah what the hell we've got 512Mb of gfx ram lets not spend as much time streamlinging things and tidying up the programming lets just go have another beer"....
