Re: 850 watt psu for 3080

I built my pc last month with getting a 3060ti in mind so only got a 650w psu.

Since the prices are crazy and stock has been nonexistent I’ve tried to get anything for a good price.

Yesterday Scan got 3070fe’s in and I missed out. Today I got a 3080fe from scan but I’m concerned the psu isn’t going to handle it.

Should I upgrade my psu or hold out for a 3060ti and cancel my 3080? I only do 1080p gaming for now.

You should have no issues with an 850w PSU . And i am jealous you got a 3080 FE, ive been trying since launch with no luck, always seem to just miss it.

Yes plenty of headroom, I have an 850w for a 3090 with no issues.

I am comfortably running an MSI Suprim X 3080 on an SF750 small form factor corsair PSU, its perfectly fine.
As long as its 80 Gold+, 750 will work fine, even 650 will be OK

if you go to PC part picker it will size the wattage of your setup

Re: 850 watt psu for 3080

Just go give my two cents: this is 100% fine as everyone else has said!

For anyone reading this who's thinking of upgrading their PSU: I can also confirm with an an undervolt 650W is ample too. I have a 3080FE + 5600x, on an EVGA 650GM. With the undervolt even with spikes, my 3080 is yet to pull over 260W (granted I think I got a very good silicon lottery.

Re: 850 watt psu for 3080

If you want to run a 3090 and a 3070, would a 850w PSU like the Corsair RM850x be enough given they seem to draw less than Nvidia suggest especially if undercooked?

Why would you want to run both in one machine?

I'm going to add my 2 cents to this thread again. I was using the HX850i for my 3090 (+ an i9 9900KF) and it was saturating the PSU ~820W-840W (not including spikes). While it was fine and didn't crash the system I upgraded to the HX1200i, I've since seen power draw as high as ~1100W. So while the GPU may well run on 850W, it's probably best to give yourself some headroom in the PSU for those spikes in power draw.

It's always good to check the power efficiency chart to see where the sweet spot is, sometimes that "overspec" as you call it means the system power draw sits at the most efficient point on that power curve.

For occasional mining and deep learning.

Interesting that you found the 3090 spiked up to 1100W! Hmm, I may need to rethink my PSU then...

Well I didn't get any crashes on the 850W, but I did deliberately limit my frame rate to 72 because I had concerns. I do wonder if Nvidia deliberately said 850W and excluded "as a bare minimum".

Re: 850 watt psu for 3080

The recommendation is likely for very low quality PSUs that struggle to do 850w in the first place

I have a 3080 and SF750, no issues with power draw here
