Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

As the title states, I'm currently building a pc and have the majority of the parts but the gpu at the moment and I'm really torn on the 6800 xt or 3080. One of my friends is very much recommending holding out for a 6800 xt due to the more vram, I currently play 1440p 144hz, I'm not really too bothered about Ray tracing but the 6800 xt does seems slightly more expensive but I can get it to roughly the same price using vouchers if I buy off amazon, putting availability aside, I'm not really too bothered when I build, I just want to make sure all the parts are right for me. Does anyone have any advice/recommendations on this, I would be able to oc both gpus.

given I've not seen any real availability except at double price from scalpers and I'll do my best to dissuade anyone from supporting this behaviour.
so I'd say which ever you can get hold of for a sane price, if you have to have it now

Re: Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

The RX6800XT will have better power consumption over the RTX3080. Also even though it is slightly slower in normal rasterised performance,I expect its larger amount of VRAM,the fact consoles use RDNA2,and also the fact AMD tends to take longer to get performance optimisations out, will mean it will match or start to go past the RTX3080 over the next 12 to 24 months.

However,I would say the RTX3080 does look more stronger if you enable heavy RT effects in games, due to the way it handles RT effects in the hardware. No doubt AMD needs to optimise better in this regard too,but I suspect Nvidia will still be quicker. Also as much as I think DLSS is a bit of a marketing ploy,Nvidia does seem to do upscaling better over what AMD does ATM.

Re: Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

Availability being equal, my gut says the nvidia card. DLSS is a serious angle for nvidia, so much so that AMD are trying to compete with their own tech - but that's not available yet and has a few years disadvantage against a company that is a bigger player in AI already.

For your use case, gaming only at 1440/144 with no interest in RT, maybe the AMD card could squeak ahead with its rasterisation numbers, but there won't be much in it. Looking at wider benchmarks it may even come down to the specific titles youi play.

If you can't wait, just get whatever comes up first, and don't feed the pirhanas.

Re: Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

I think the 3080 is the better all-around card, but if you have NO interest in RT or DLSS, only care about rasterisation (also can depend on what games you play as this can potentially swing quite far in the direction of one card over the other in terms of performance) - then the 6800xt could be the better choice, and is SUPPOSED to be cheaper, although at the moment it seems to be more expensive, as it's even more difficult to get hold of than the 3080!

It also depends on which games you play. Some games are optimized better for either GPUs due to deals made between publishers and Nvidia/AMD.

More a case of what you can actually buy..

I wanted the AMD cards but settled for an NVidia card, while the 16Gb on the AMD would have been nice for futureproofing the maturity of the other features on the NVidia 30 series swung it, as did actually being able to get a 3060 lol..

Re: Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

I would only go for the 6800XT right now if you were seriously considering gaming in 4K. I can't imagine the difference would be drastic at 1440p between the two cards. It really does come down to availability right now.. 3060ti is probably the most accessible card right now. Then 3070 I'd say but hopefully stock will start filtering through

Re: Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

I'd go for the 3080, Nvidia really offers the more complete package with features like DLSS and ray tracing. Plus stuff like ShadowPlay which AMD just isn't even competing with.

Re: Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

Personally I'd got with AMD as ray tracing doesn't look very compelling in the immediate future (subjective).

Plus nVidia is incredibly stingy with their VRAM (except for unknown reason on their low-end cards which have more VRAM than a 3080... what?)

That said, good luck finding a 6800XT for less than £900 ish.

RT/DLSS comes down to preference and individual games. Personally, I'd put far more emphasis on conventional performance at the moment given how gimmicky RT tends to be and how much it destroys performance (YMMV).

AMD have had their version of Shadowplay for years, ReLive. I was using it when I had my 280X...

3080 or 6800 and have it oc'ed. 16gb of ram is good but at the moment AMD can't quite match up the offering on 3080 yet.

AMD is (maybe) coming out with their own version of DLSS, Fidelity FX Super Resolution. For now Fidelity FX or Trixx Boost do a decent job (not as good as DLSS 2.0 technically).

The 6000 series support ray tracing ~ the performance of the 2080ti which is ok, not anywhere near as good as then 3000 nvidia series, but it's there.

AMD ReLive is a thing. I dont know enough about either but I do know it used to be better overall feature wise compared to shadowplay (More dials for customisation) and has been around for years.

If you care about Ray tracing+DLSS, play at 4K (depending on CPU bottleneck) or stream (nvidias encoder is way way better), decent overclocking, then the 3000 series is the way to go.

If you want pure performance, 6gb more VRAM (might be better in future, today not so much apart from crazy modded games), OK ray tracing support, better power efficiency, great overclocking headroom, plan on using Linux (nvidia just straight garbage in linux) then the AMD is the way to go.

Both have solid drivers so completely depends on the games you want to play, and what else you do.

Re: Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

    You currently play 1440p 144hz.

Which card and hardware do you currently have?

I've been an AMD user for many years now and only had a couple of Nvidia cards since way back when 3DFX Voodoo 2-3 cards were a thing

This time around I am almost 100% buying a Nvidia card if I can get my hands on one.

The performance without all the fancy extras is ever so slightly in favour to Nvidia right now if you checkout all the reviews and benchmarking.

Both had drops today. One, a bunch of people managed to get ahold of (thanks to Scan!). The other, was a joke and I did not hear of one person who managed.

Monitor the drops, go for the 3080, I'd say.

Re: Should I get an rx 6800 xt or rtx 3080?

1440p wise 6800xt would perhaps be easier to pick up than the 3080 and although 6800xt looks to be on the slower side comparing with the 3080, it does have 16gb of vram which may give it a bit of longevity. for the time being i think 6800xt would make your PC building task more achievable.
