I highly doubt the CPU is a serious bottleneck. I went from a ti4600 to a 9800pro on a similar system and the difference was incredible in nearly everything.

The 9800pro has more than twice the fill rate and memory bandwidth and in my experience it actually delivers close to double the FPS in many cases, compaired to the ti4600.

Driver problem. Use DC 3, and make sure chipset drivers are installed ok. Your CPU also isn't helping.

A 9800Pro is like 3 years old remember.

I run a 9800NP with a XP2500 @ 2.1Ghz. What sort of FPS are you getting in HL2? IIRC I think mine hangs around at about 60-70 average. Haven't played it in a while so can't be sure.

My 2500 sure as hell isn't a bottleneck.

It would be if you stuck it in a MSI K7N420 nForce1 Mobo like my 2400 is!

    Zak33 - excellent advice about Direct3d/OpenGL - I'd never even thought of that..doh!

The colours and text sharpness with the 9800pro are excellent but they don't seem any better than the old Ti4600 which was also superb. Even the Geforce3 Ti200 on my 'work' computer is very good indeed. Both my computers share the same monitor and I when I switch between the two with my KVM I really can't see any difference. Maybe thats down to limitations of the monitor, or maybe its my eyes, I don't know, but colours are vibrant and text is super sharp with both the Ti200 and the 9800pro.

You guys wouldn't say that if you'd look at what the 9800 Pro does on an A64 compared to an Athlon XP.

    I went from a Ti4200 to a 9800pro and noticed a huge difference in DX9 games.

Far Cry ran like a dog on the 4200, but is an entirely different game on the 9800,
    especially the water effects etc.

I admit there's not a lot in it for most DX8 stuff. The 4200 usually handles these with ease.

i did put the 'huge' in inverted's!

just out of interest (not arguement) as ive never had the means to test loads and loads of kit, but you seem like a man with some experience.........have you got any benchmarks, say 3d 2003/5 not 2001 with the 9800pro with athlon xp's againt a64's. just that i'm sure it will hold it back, but i was under the impression it wouldnt be by a large amount.

I haven't bothered with 3dmark yet, but BF1942 is playable on my video card at 1600x1200 4x AA/16x AF, with my CPU set to 800MHz. Frame rate is about 40% lower than the way I normaly run things, but it's still better than what I got at the same graphics settings with my CPU at 2.5GHz with my ti4600 or my 9800pro.

A 9800pro at reasonble settings won't be seriously held back by a decent Athlon XP. An A64 would definatly be faster, but if I had to chose between an A64 with a ti4600 and a Athlon XP with a 9800pro for games, I would defiantly take the latter.

You can do a search on the Futuremark site, here .
The 9800Pro got these ranges of scores in 3DMark05 with approved drivers:
    Athlon XP: 812 to 3093
    Athlon 64: 1179 to 3459.
So a healthy difference, but nothing to make it essential to upgrade the CPU+mobo.
3DMark03 probably shows a greater difference.
If you narrow the search to specific clock speeds that might avoid the effect of overclocking skewing the results.

thanks buddy, i didnt realise you could do that. shows roughly what i thought, not a big difference, at least not big enough to cause a 'major dissapointment'.

A 30% average greater framerate is not significant to you?

And that's 2k5. 2k3 and 2k1 show a much larger increase because they are less VC dependant (especially 2k1). Disappointment (like beauty) is in the eyes of the beholder.

It depends on what you want to test. What are you trying to find out? Are you looking for an overall test or something in particular?
