Some plasmas are better than others. I know. I used to test them for a largish computer company.

I got a Hitachi 42DP3000 last Jan and love it. My couch is about 9-10 feet from the screen, and I watch normal TV, DVDs, *cough*digital TV eps*cough*, play games (NFSU2, Lineage2 and BF1942), and IRC on this thing.

It supports 1280x768 res, which is (roughly) the lower HDTV, which looks AWESOME on it.

Even up close, although the letters are obviously bigger, it is as crisp as any of my TFT's (there are seven computers and 10 TFTs in my house).

I have yet to see any noticeable drop in clarity and am very pleased with this powered splitter...

PoGGeh, yea I'm lovin' this one too...I'm also running it at 1280x1024, but use the TFT for everything else considering that it is VERY bright and it makes sense to sit a fair bit away so isn't the best option for 'desktop' tasks...

    Gaming, Movies etc - PERFECT!!!

You could sit back and do other stuff but that would call for changing some stuff in my room...

The only thing thats bad abt plasmas is that they 'burn in', have u lot faced it? How bad is it?
Also, the res on some of the plasma is pretty low (840 x 522, sumthin like it :S) unless u buy expensive ones, wheras even the cheapest lcd have high res enuf to support 1080i (i think).

I am also thinkin of buyin a large screen for watching dvd and tv which do u recomend lcd or plasma if price is not a huge factor?

Plasmas only have burn in on high bright spots that are around for a long time. Most plasma manufacturers know about this and do combat it. For instance, every 10 mins or so, my screen moves by 1px, up, down, left, right. Not enough to ever get annoying but it supposedly stops it. Most films/games move to quick to have bright spots in one place for very long. The biggest problem comes with DOGs. The things in the corner of the screen, though again it seems that teh networks have thought about this too. Most arent full white anymore, and are very slightly opaque (have a look) and therefore change colour minutely when the film moves. Again, I believe this is enough to stop "burn in". Ive had mine for 19 months now, and not a trace of burn.

Resolution doesnt really matter for videos/games etc. Watch a film on your computer at 1920x1080, then watch the same at 1280x720. Theres no a WHOLE lot of difference. Its only where text is concerned that it makes a real impact, but I can IRC easily from 10 feet away without problems, I wouldnt want a higher res, cos then I couldnt use my screen as a computer monitor.

    Hi

Thanks bsodmike I have been looking at the 42” LG and trying to decide if I should buy it I have found the LG 42PM1MA HD Ready Plasma Display for only £1599.99 with free delivery can you tell me is this the one you have?

I have a ps2 and a cube and I do a lot of gaming and want to make sure what I get is good.

You seem really happy so I am hopping it the same one!

    Regards,

    Hiya Wolfy

I have the RT-42PX11 but whatever you get, just ensure that it has at least the following:

Component - at least 2 interfaces
    Composite - Say 3 minimum + S-Video to each
DVI or HDMI - more the merrier! HDMI is really a dressed up DVI.

...of course we don't care about what audio inputs it take as you'd be using a decent HT setup

Good luck, and let us know how it goes for you.

This man speaks truth. There's never been anything good about composite, it's the worst possible feed next to RF.

If you can, get hold of a PS2 component cable and feed through that, you will see an incredible difference in picture, and it'll allow you to run certain games in 480p

    Hi

Thanks for the advice the site says it has the following

Inputs: HDMI, DVI, RS-232C, RGB In/Out (D-sub 15pin), PC Audio In (Phone Type), IR Jack (Phone Type), AV In/Out, S-Video, SCART, Component.

I think this is one of there new LG models. There is some more information on the site if anyone wants to look. But do you think this will have every think I need, I have never had a plasma before an I want to make sure I am getting the right one.

I am also going to look at the Samsung range like 5lab suggested but I do like the look of the LG.

Thanks again for the advice so far

What gets me is that there's the potential for a really smooth streamline look, especially with this pic:

But then you go and fill the desk with crap anyway so it's wasted

    Sort it!

Most plasmas of that size'll be shipping at about 1366x768. We've got some NEC 50" and a Samsung 63" in meeting rooms here.

Yes, composite sucks but useful now and then...I tend to steer clear of it thought.

    Kalniel:

That image is ancient, I think sometime last year hehe. My setup has evolved to this (so far):

And the mac mini is no longer the HTPC. The G5 (pictured right) is going to treat the plasma as its second monitor. Oh, it's going to be wall mounted too. That was a shot of the room just before I returned to England at the end of Easter.

Ok, wall mounting the plasma may redeem the situation
