Widescreen Desktop Resolutions - How To?

    Hi all,

Firstly, my PC has an ASUS Radeon 9800XT Graphics card.
It's normal output thing (VGA?) is connected to a 19" Sony Trinitron Monitor (Multiscan G400), on a resolution of 1280x1024, 32bit True Colour @ 90Hertz.

    All is good, however...
I've recently purchased a Philips 26" LCD TV for my bedroom, which now sits next to my monitor, so naturally, one had to consider hooking it up.
So, I've got myself a DVI to DVI cable, and connected the PC to the LCD screen, and quite to my surprise, it all worked first time around. Press 'PC' on the TV remote, and there it is! Looking lovely too!

    My problem is this:
How the devil does one use a widescreen display? At first my image is just 4:3, with black bars either side. I can use the settings on the screen itself to stretch the image, but then it's clearly visible that the image has been stretched.
Is it possible to set the Windows desktop to be widescreen? It would be especially useful for when watching movies.

What options do I have and how should I configure the Monitor and the LCD?

    Thanks,
    Parm

There should (may) be some drivers for the TV on a CD/Website that will enable it to do widescreen resolutions.

You can set it off your graphic card normally or to get custom resolution/timings use one of the tweakers for your card such as Powerstrip, Multires etc.
You need to check what your display is capable of though and some games won`t run in WS or odd resolutions.
