    7800gt v 6800gt @ 1680x1050

Umming and ahhhing about replacing my (6 months old) 6800GT with a spangly 7800GT.....what do you think ?

Main point to consider is resolution of 1680x1050 I use for everything (Dell 2005FPW) and this is the crux - will I experience a notable performance gain with the 7800GT or not ? I know that CPU headroom is going to limit lower resolutions (I run a Venice 3000 @ 2.3GHz) but am keen to establish simply whether I will really benefit in getting the 7800GT.

My understanding is that this would probably be a worthless upgrade (or at least costly for minimal performance gain !) if I was using 1024x768 or 1280x1024, but - as I am running a higher resolution - perhaps the 7800GT will be a worthwhile improvement ?

Any thoughts gladly welcomed....... and there may well soon be a immaculate 6800GT (happily runs @ Ultra (400/1100) with no mods, just nVidia auto-clocking) up for the right price......... offers ???

Id say hold off for a while, at least to see what R520 brings to the market (if it ever makes it), even if you end up going with a 7800 then prices may have come down enough to get a gtx over a gt. Have you considered a second 6800 and sli?

Tbh, I can get a new 7800GT for just over £200 and thus a second 6800GT is not really financially viable.......I think my main point of decision is whether or not the 7800 will be beneficial because of the 1680x1050 resolution - the 6800GT is fine, and is more than fine for 1280x1024 etc, but 1680x1050 is that little more demanding.....

LIke i said, hold off at least till r520, you might find that r520 compltely owns (unlikely ill admit, but hey, it could happen) How choppy is the 6800?

I think at that res, and with your CPU at 2.3 you would notice a difference with the 7800gt, more so on the very latest games. A 7800gt at 200 quid would be a great buy - regardless of any ATI cards.

If you could get the warrenty-voided 6800gt down below GTO prices I might be interested

Well, I guess the 7800GT may be the route.....will sell on the 6800GT.....although - sorry, Kalniel, not for GTO2 prices

Offers, if interested, entertained - everyone's favourite auction site and my own retail outlet will most likely be the favourite, though....

I'm in the same boat with a 2005FPW.

Ended up buying a XT800 GTO2 to unlock & overclock for now. The beauty of this monitor is you can set the aspect ratio to 1:1 at lower resolutions if a game won't run smoothly at 1680x1050.

Then early/mid next year I'm looking at getting a second gen version of either nvidia or ATI which usually offers good performance gains (eg Geforce to Geforce2) and more games will actually need that sort of GPU power.

I'd say its worth it tbh. sell the 6800gt you'd get roughly 120-140 and then another 100 for the 7800gt.

The 6800gt will pump out about 30 fps at that resolution but i'd say my 7800gt gets about 50 without overclocking and nearer to 60 with it. thats with high AA and AF (farcry is my example game).

I'm running a 3800X2 at 2.5 on each core so there shouldn't be too much difference CPU wise.

Sounds like the plan - I am just planning to swap out my Venice 3000+ with a X2 3800+ - allegedly relatively easy to get to 2.3/2.4GHz on stock cooling ? - and then the 7800GT will have a happy partner........just got to put the 6 month old 6800GT up for sale, certain favourite auction site looming large !

Offers on a rather fine Gigabyte 6800GT 256MB PCI-e, approx 6 months old, with full retail pack - easily reaches Ultra speeds (400/1100) with basic Windows tweaking in nVidia driver 'CoolBits' extension, may even go higher still..... ????

    7800GT & X2 3800+ are now en route.........

First off this needs to be in fs/t and secondly i think theres a rule against 'offers' threads, you need to have a firm price
