Question x1800xl or 7800gt price no problem

I was trying to find the Hexus reivew of the x1800 cards (with the nvidias 7800's) but can't find it. I can't remember which out performs the other. The new ATI drivers improve OpenGL so much that I might pay the bit extra and go for an x1800xl but I can't remember if the x1800xl outperforms the 7800gt in other areas by a significant margin.

Can anyone shed some light - I realise that a fast chip is required for best performance. edit wish to run at 1600x1200 with some aa/af

the 7800gt walks over the X1800XL most of the time.

Plus an X1800XL is priced like a 7800GTX which completely annhilates it.

Even if the performance of the x1800xl was slightly better in certain things, the real world performance would be negligible and price is the ultimate factor (unless you tried to prove how foolish you are by paying tons extra for 3 fps). Saying price is not a problem is just naive. The 6800/x800 generation and the latest generation are all about pricing and availability (unless you're worried about SLI). The 9x00/GeForce FX generation is the only exception to this rule that I see.

The fact is, in terms of raw performance and speed X1800XL is best. But in applicable gaming performance I'd say that all round the 7800 is a more worthwhile investment. This is coming from a long time ATI user, but the truth has to be accepted...ATI offerings of late, scream complacency whereas nVidia are sqeezing every last feature and speed out of thier specs.

But the new ATI drivers have to be take well into account, if they can gain 25 - 35% performance in 1 update in open GL, imagine what the rest of the updates can bring..

IMO, ATI are holding their cards back for the moment untill nvidia try and raise the bar..

A few extra percent at most?

Nvidia *did* raise the bar, some months ago, and if a noisy, hot, two slot card is ATI taking it easy, I'm worried what really trying would do

PS can't wait for the R480.
PPS can't wait for the 7800 ultra
PPPS can't wait even more for a simple 7600gt

ATI's OpenGL implementation was darn weak to begin with tho..

I'd forgotten all about that part - yes, it's much larger/hotter/noiser than the GTX now isn't it? I remember being quite shocked seeing the GTX next to my old 68000 Ultra (also a two slot monster) as it's so much smaller. Runs a darn sight cooler too!
I wouldn't be suprised if ATI's next revision of the 520 brings in better thermals tho (but lord knows when they'll actually ship *that* ).

The problem is these cards appear to be neck and neck now with the new drivers. I simply have the chance of paying 7800gt price for an x1800xl.

The choice will dictate whether I go xfire or sli with a mobo. Still can't find that Hexus article.

My initial feeling is that the 7800gt wins but as said above it appears that the x1k series take advantage of ati's new drivers.

I'm just wondering if it's worth waiting till after xmas to buy when things are a bit more settled.

If you have money to burn, then you can afford SLI, (and if necessary a new motherboard to run it). nVidia SLI is avalabe and stable. ATI crosfire is not.

well I'm not s939 yet so just building a new system - I shouldn't have titled it money no problem!!!

what I meant was if they cost the same which one would you buy and why. The idea is if I choose x1800 then a xfire mobo follows and if I choose 7800 then SLi mobo gets bought.

As far as things settling I just might wait to see if ati improve the drivers a bit more and get a decent comparison between SLi and Xfire before choosing.

how much space do you have in your case?

the 7800's are bigger than the 6800's which were bordering on too big for my case!
