    thinking of upgrading

hello. i currently have a 3500+ 2.2 processor, MSI SLI motherboard with Radeon xpress 200 chipset, 1 gb of 2-channel kingston ram, and an x800xl 512mb card. i am thinking of upgrading to a 7800gt, but i am wondering if it is worth it. will the 7800gt hit against the cpu's speed, where i wouldnt be getting any more performance? thanks

The 3500+ is a good match for the 7800gt. You would see an increase in performance.

As to whether it's worth it.. are you noticing any slow downs with your current set up? If you are, and it's annoying, then yes, it's worth it. But if you can play the games you've got just fine then it might not be.

A good question to ask would be what resolution are you running your games at ?.

If you run things at 1024x768 then there will be a difference but it won't be earth shattering.

ok. thats good to hear. the reason im wondering is because many are saying the 939 venice 3500+ is old...infact our very own hexus matched it up in a review with a 6200 LE 128mb! i run games at 1024x768. (limited by monitor) now i know thats not alot but considering the graphical intensity of the games i play (such as the dazzling X3: the reunion), i think should merit an upgrade.

    thanks for the help...

(worries of the 3500 being too old for a 7800gt that is )

erm no heh. i could run crossfire if i want.

so anyway ive read alot about gfx cards--endless reviews, topics, ext. but do u think that a 7800gt will be a big enough step up frm an x800xl 512mb? its venerable, but definitely not slow. still got 16 pipes, 7 vetices shaders, and 400/1000 clock/mem respectivley. again i run games a 1024x768, but at highest quality, fully with aa and af. in games such as x3, i do experience some lag, but not sure if its gfx card related. any words?

The lag in games like X3 will be reduced/eliminated by going for a 7800gt, most likely. But we're not the ones who can say if it's worth it. You are playing at full aa and af - how much are you willing to pay to continue to do so without any lag on the most recent games?

Personally, the difference would not be worth it for me - I would rather just play at reduced IQ settings than shell out. But everyone has their price

yah ur right. i just needed to take a step back and take a perspective look. the x800xl 512mb is still a workable card, and should i need to upgrade, my processor will still suffice. if not i may think about nabbing a nice cheap fx-55. but otherwise thanks for the info! game on

Waste of money if your going to use 1024. A new monitor should be first.
