I have a NEC Multisync LCD1760NX which is a very good monitor IMO but its not black.

The Hercules ProphetView 920 looks quite nice though. If not that the Hitachi's look good.

Got a sony 18 inch refurb from digi-uk - very happy with iit, though it really needs DVI to make it worthwhile.

    Don't get the prophetview!

CustomPC gave it something like 45% because of its bland color's and shameful ghosting.

I have the NEC1760NXBK which is the black version (hence the BK at the end -

The bezel is actually grey but shows almost white due to flash....

    VERY good monitor, highly recommended.

I have a Hitachi CML 171SWB 17" that I bought from Overclockers UK. It is stealthy black with a 16ms response time and runs 1280x1024.

Brightness is great and I am really impressed. I use DELL screens at work and I think it measures up for significantly less money. The fast response means it performs really well with action movies and games.

There was also a great write-up on Toms Hardware about it which is what prompted my purchase.

Of course, since then the market has moved on and I haven't had the bottle to keep up to date since dropping £350 on a screen incase I find out what I missed out on!

I am still happy with the screen and trying hard not to think about dual screen!

Oh, and it supports DVI and comes with the cable.

From what I've seen the brands to go for are Samsung, Hitachi, LG and NEC/Mitsubishi. All seem to be excellent for games and general use.

Avoid cheaper brands and Sony, IMO.

The Iiyama Prolite 431S range is worthy of your attention. 16ms screen for £320. Comes in black, silver or beige.

Only problem is no included DVI cable and the power supply is an external brick.
