    Dodgy 6800 GT?

I've got an intermittent fault on my PC. Y'know, one of those problems I really cannot be arsed to do anything about, but should probably find the root of.

What happens is, on occasion, my monitor will go blank and come back on in a manner suggesting it lost its signal briefly. On other occasions the screen will jump to a state where only the top left quadrant is displayed, and there are stripes going horizonally across the screen. Changing the resolution down and then back up fixes this (although it's fun to do, let me tell you.)

The screen randomly flickers, and it's only occasionally (a couple of times a day I notice it.) The second problem seems to be less random, often happening as a new window loads, and particularly when I fire up VLC, for some reason... although it may just be my perception of the problem.

My graphics card is an XFX 6800 GT PCIe, currently at stock clocks. I don't think these are the only drivers I've had on and experienced these problems so I think we can rule out software. The monitor is a Viewsonic VP171s run off DVI - I could change to DSUB to see if it's to do with the signal or the monitor itself. However, I'm inclinded to think it's a graphics card issue.

    Any thoughts?

    Ta,
    Steve.

    That'll just be something initialising.

My problem is far from boot time, and the system is usually left for days on end (if not weeks) without a reboot.

Do try the other output from the gfx card first - could be one of your RAMDACs is on it's way out (or the physical connection more likely - these bits often get 'wobbled' a lot).

Er and of course, keep an eye on temperatures - could just be dust build up in the fan.
