6600GT to 7800GS XT upgrade - worth it?

I've currently got an XFX 256MB 6600GT and was thinking of upgrading to an XFX 256MB 7800GS XT. But before I pay out £234.99 I want to make sure that it's worth it. This will only be for about 4 or 5 months as I'm going to be fully upgrading my PC in the summer and going PCI-e and possibly M2.

At stock the 6600GT runs at 500/950 and the 7800GS XT runs at 440/1300. The GPU speed is a tad slower but the memory speed is quite a lot faster. Will I find much of a difference or should I just wait until I upgrade later in the year.

If I did upgrade the Grpahics Card now, how much do you think my old one would get? Scan's price is just over £130 but out of stock.

I would wait till the PCIe upgrade you intend in the not so distant summer, then maybe a 7900 series or Ati equivelent will be a better buy?

Until then maybe treat yourself to a Xfi sound card as your still onboard, this will boost your gaming experiance and you can also use this in the new platform.

Ofcourse it's always a "do I wait" game, it depends on how desperate you are, like are the games you want to play now, playable? Or do you think they arn't worth playing untill the upgrade? If you get say £100 for your card thats still £130 to spend. It's how much you get for the 7800GS and with the 7900 coming out that will drop.

Ok thanks for the advice. I don't really want to pay out now only to have to pay out again in the summer so I'll probably stick with what I got. However, if there was going to be a huge performance increase I might well got for it.

What sound card would you recommend?

heard good things about the XFi extreme music, though I still use the Audigy 2ZS. As the card can be used in the new set up it would be money well spent me thinks Maybe wait for a today only on scan and with your free delivery you'd get a bargain?

As a side-note the 7800GS will be a fairly big difference ffrom a 6600GT BUT yeah if your due an upgrade to PCI-E then maybe you would want to wait?

Having saifd that you'll probably get around £70 for the 6600GT...so maybe that encourages you?

I'm happy with my 6600GT, I only got it back in the summer when i replaced my Ti4600 which I had for a few years.

Think I'm going to wait, unless i suddenly come across some money, but then I'd probably get the whole rig upgraded.

I'll wait for a tempting today only deal for the sound card too, onboard does just fine for now.

I went from a 6800GT to a 7800GT (and from AGP to PCI-E). There is a difference, but only noticeable on certain games in certain situations. My brother has a 6600GT in his PC, and it played CoD2 as well as mine.

The 6600GT is a perfectly capable card ATM, so I'd wait. I only upgraded due to hardware failure.

BTW - My 6800GT is for sale, open to offers!

I could do, but I'm in no hurry to get it. Think it was on some time last week anyways so they won't stick it back on for a while now.
