just to get my head round this 16.2 vs 16.7 lark, am i right in thinking this gradient below should appear even on one of the s-ips or mva panels like the dell or viewsonic as oppsed to the vertical lines i can see in it on my iiyama with a 8ms TN panel?

    thanks

16.2m colours v 16.7m colours is really about how accurate colours look, with colour gradients one example of how that shows up.

16.2m colours is actually something like 256,000 plus dithering to give the appearance of extra colours. It might look bright, it might look colourful but it doesn't tend to look quite as natural as a true 16.7m high quality (ie non cheapo) colour panel that achieves that colour range without dithering. Think those big photos of someone's face that you see in Cosmopolitan magazine. Imagine the same picture but the skin tone looking slightly odd or unnatural eg. too redish, too bluish etc or one of those macro phots of an insect or a flower not looking quite right and you get the idea.

All things being equal (eg. quality, response times, panel type etc), there's really no reason these days to choose a 16.2m panel over a 16.7m one (other than price).

    See here:
    http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/6bit_8bit.htm

    Russian rocket scientist's explanation here:-
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/oth...-guide_11.html

16.2m colour panels crop up in the strangest of places. The Dell 2407 has a 16.2m dithered panel, whereas the previous 2405 model had true 16.7m colours. But then again Dell are a bit of strange company when it comes to lobbing different panels into their monitors and giving them all the same model number....

Personally, I don't think there's currently such a thing as a perfect all round 20" WS monitor. Its all seems to be about compromise.

    ditto

All the 20" TFTs seemed much the same when i bought my dell, went for the dell because of the very adjustable stand.

thanks davidstone28, very useful info there. i'm leaning more to an s-ips 16.7m colour panel and a calibration tool i think now after some research.

thanks to all for looking and commenting.

I'm toying with the idea of getting one of these over a Dell 2007FPW
