is my rad 9800 stopping me o/cing my cpu

    hello
untill last week i was running my 2500xp barton at 204x11 with a rad 9700 o/c to 355/324, it ran everything fine {bar the usual call of duty demo crash} 3d mark 2001 ,3d mark 03, halo ut 2k3 all ran really well no problems at all
now ive got myself a rad 9800 pro so i uninstalled the 9700 used drivercleaner etc then installed the 9800 with the 3.7 cats
now evrything i tried to do i.e. play a game or run 3d mark my pc would freeze or my monitor would go off with just the led light flashing on it, ive tried using 3.7 3.8 and 3.9s ati and omega and it happens the same on all
so i reset my cpu to 11x166 which is its correct setting and everything works great again, so now i can get my fsb to 174 before the pc starts crashing again
so i took the 9800 out reinstalled the 9700 and i can get straight to 204 fsb and it plays everything happily all day no crashes or freezes so i think it must have something to do with the 9800
so basically is it somehow possible that my graphics card wont let me o/c my cpu?
any help would be appreciated as its doing my head in

could it be a psu issue ? i know this may not sound a very good suggestion but tbh thats the only thing i could see it being. Also have u tried the 9800 on the drivers u were originally using with the 9700 ? as this also sounds like it could be a windows minidump problem which indicates conflicting drivers.

*thinks aloud, so only read casually in case i'm talking rubbish*

I use Add Remove programs for taking out Catalyst drivers....I reboot after BOTH Control panel and driivers are out.

I oly download the Cat 3.9 driver and control panel seperately....not as a combined thing with the other bit of software.....(it ruined my Rad9800Pro everytimeI used the combined one)

Then I install DRIVERS by just clicking on the downloaded package....then YES TO ALL for overwriting drivers...then NO REBOOT.....install Control Panel....YES TO ALL again...

    then reboot...

THEN....into Options for the graphics card, DISABLE VPU recovery, cos it doesnt damn well help,....and also DISABLE SIDEBAND ADDRESSING.....(think thats in SMART GART tab)

and now all is well on mine.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST......I wobbled my heatsink on my 9800Pro...its fitted with 2 plastic pins...pinch them tight, pop it off...clean it...and the core....reapply Arctic 3.....STRETCH the SPRINGS so they hold it down harder.....reapply it....push plastic pins through....

    yummy...faster now

    *stops thinking aloud*

I take it you have already tried turning off Fast Writes and Side Band Addressing, plus switched down to AGP 2x?

    uh NightShade737,

AGP 2x, would you honestly recommend switching down that far, I mean I have heard of people using 4x and turning off vpu recover, fast writes and sideband addressing but never to AGP 2x? My 9700 doesn't even give me the option in my bios (as I think its an AGP ver 3 card ie 8X / 4x only?)

    CrapshoT,

I would suggest turning off vpu recover tho as this crashed my 9700 all the time, I haven't had to turn anything else off tho, good luck.
