    Thats a good point.

I've been looking up the X1800XT's and still can't help but think that they may be a better option.

I realise that they have a noisy fan (which can be easily replaced with a third party one), but with a greater amount of memory, practically the same clock speeds, and more or less the same price they must be better value?

nah, they have less pipelines, if this was the case why would anyone have ever bought th 7900 gt, behind the scenes they are about the same performance with the ati being better in some things and the nvidia in others..

This is why choosing a new graphics card is so difficult

Currently Counter Strike Source...I would like to play other titles but my computer just can't run anything else

Thats why my graphics card decision is all important

The price of x1900xt's has taken a nose dive since the introduction of the x1950xtx.

Can anyone recommend one of those over a 7900GT?

Yes. it shouldn't even be a contest tbh, against a 7900GT>

The specification of the x1900xt is very impressive against the 7900GT. I've read up some reviews and its a very powerful card.

I went for the Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 for around £150 all in from Overclockers. I was reluctant to spend more due to the next gen DX10 cards being here soon.

This was a replacement for two faulty 7900gt's before it!

Very happy with the performance, I get over 10K in 3DMark 05. Noisy fan was not an issue as I already had a Zalman cooler for it. It does need a decent PSU though!! Plays all the latest games maxed out at 1280x1024 no problems.

    Very reassuring

    I'll be using a 500W Seasonic psu...this should be enough I imagine

I'd be tempted to go for a 512mb XT with that all in mins (IF I had a better PSU!) Noise isn't really an issue as to be honest anyone heavily into GFX cards will probably end up getting an aftermarket cooler anyway?!

I've got the signature 7900GT and its an amazing card, upgraded from a 7800GTX512 and it runs most games faster, though it ocasionally stutters unlike the 512 but thats rare and only usually during the first half hour of playing, I assume its the memory. Though I'm about to put in my new 7900GX2 in again, now its been returned from scan, as soon as I update my BIOS and drivers so I hopefully don't get blue screens with it again.

I eventually went for an XFX 7900GT Extreme Edition.

I only have a 17" TFT monitor so there was no need to buy a card which is meant for much higher resolution purposes
