Need passive cooled card for my 3007WFP

In this thread I mentioned that I'm building a new PC to upgrade to the Dell 3007FWP monitor.

I'd really like the machine to run quietly so I was hoping to get a Dual Link DVI passive cooled card. By running at such a large res (2560 x 1600) will I risk overheating the card, or does it not work like that?

Also, I'm probably going to go for Asus P5B Deluxe mobo so I figured it makes sense to get a graphics card from the same manufacturer. There's a few passively cooled Asus Nvidia cards here. Any of those any good?

    Thanks in advance.

There is no reason to buy from the same manufacturer for gfx and motherboard other than if you like the manufacturer.

The main issue will be if you are gaming on the graphics card, you will need something powerful enough to run 2560x1600, in which case you would want something like a GX2 or X1950XT - then for silence your best option is watercooling.

If you aren't gaming then any dual link card will do I beleive. The 7900GS is a nice card for the money.

Passively cooled card should still be able to handle the maximum output of that card, just make sure you have OK case ventilation.

So you'd think that NVIDIA Fanless 7900GS 256MB DDR2 PCI-E would be okay? Do MSI make good cards?

Not planning on doing any hi-res gaming as I'm happy to scale down. Just want a nice desktop res and nice handling of Vista.

    Thanks

If you are not doing gaming then a 7900GT will do you just fine. More than just fine really. DX10 cards will be the best experience in Vista apparently, but they're not out yet so...

If that one comes around to bite you (no pun intended) then I'm not gonna be the one to verify it...

As far as passive goes, I'd still say the XFX is FTW...

And will flood the PCI bandwidth at that high a resolution, so even 2d work will struggle

The suggestion of the passive 7900gt is probably the best so far, though I would be tempted to look at the x1900s aswell

    Thanks for the replies.

I've heard that the MSI NX7900GT runs hot and needs a fan. Info here.

As such I'm about to go for the MSI NX7900GS as Rack suggested.
