    XFX 7900GS 256Mb 450M Help

    Hey all,
Recently just bought a XFX 7900GS 450M and got problems on the second of installation...

I played around with various drivers, latest, drivers supplied on CD and 8x.xx versions but no luck.

The problem is that it shows Green Pixel Dots and Green Lines all over the screen when running 1280x1024 @ 75Hz.

However at 60Hz at this res it seems to be fine, although now and again the green pixel dots will turn up for a moment or two. Just wondered if this is a power problem or whether the card was shipped as faulty???

Also shipped with the card was some kind of molex adapter or something but found no use for it as I couldnt find any connector that would suit it. Also I should state (which may help problemsolve) that this card is single DVI not dual if that makes a diffrence to my problem or a solution I don't know, but thought it may be relevant!

    My XFX Card needs you...

    Thanks
    Leeboh

Sounds like you got a bad one, quite common with the early 7900's. Not so much the GS though. First thing to do would be reseat it and make sure the PCI-e power connected it plugged in right, the check the fan spins. If you still get problems then I'd RMA it.

Exactly what chuckskull said ^^ Sounds like you got a duff card.

Does it artifact before loading into windows? i.e. at POST?

The adaptor you're talking about sounds like a molex to 6 pin power adaptor - if it is, then just ignore it. I cant imagine its gonna be your psu either. This def sounds like a dud card

Surely the power cable has got to be worth a try before RMAing the card!

There should be a 6 pin socket on the video card, normally on the edge right in the middle of your PC case. The lead is for adapting hard drive style power connectors to the 6 pin socket on the video card for people that don't have a PSU that has that 6 pin connector on already.

The 6 pin connector is rated at 75W of power, so the card could be running up to that amount short of juice. If the card is a factory overclocked model (ISTR it is) then it probably runs at slightly higher than normal voltages which wouldn't help.

    Do what they say first

But you might want to run 3dmark 06 and Fear to push the card to see if it artifacts.

It could be temperature related also.

I know on my XFX 7900GT it was faulty memory (graphic card memory) that was causing green dots/artifacts.

thanks for all your replies, and sorry for my late post!

I have 'RMA'd' the card back. The fan did spin and no it didnt seem to artifact at POST strangely. However for it to only artifact at 75Hz was very strange and therefore made me believe that it had to be surely faulty.

dabs.com however will in future be my last resort to make any purchase from simply because if you have a problem its a very long process to get resolved. Mainly because there is no telephone support. Secondy I ordered a return and was given a date and an estimated time for pickup, however it was never picked up and after speaking to a representive over the phone said that nothing on their computer suggested I had made a return... grrr

Anyways hopefully will be seeing a new one soon.

Also could anyone explain to me the deficit between single link DVI and dual link DVI, will the difference be sufficient to notice?

    I appreciate your responses

Check wikipedia DVI entry for a really good explanation, but basically DVI only goes up so high in resolution, so to drive really big widescreen monitors you need dual link which sends 2 pixels at once.

For most of us mortals by the time such resolution monitors come down in price enough to afford one I will have upgraded my video card again
