Stripping security HELP!

Hi guys, I recently had to put my hard drive into a caddy and then use the Back up system tool in xp pro to break the security settings inorder to prevent data loss. The proceedure worked and when I restored them I backed them up onto my laptop. Now all of a sudden those folders have become restricted again and wont let me open them saying access denied, also when you hover over a folder it says its empty.

I have no idea why all of a sudden certain folders have become locked again but the problem now is that my laptop doesnt have Windows Professional but Home which doesnt seem to have the Back up facility that pro does! Is there any other way to break this lock or can I get Back up on XP home edition?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as these folders contain pictures of the first year of my babys life so I'm a bit gutted at the minute to say the least

Its probably down to the NTFS file permissions. I know in Pro you can take ownership of the folders, removing the restriction, but I don't know if Home has this feature.

Is there anyway you can get access to an XP Pro machine, with admin privileges? Work Net Admins may be able to do it for you?

I have an XP pro pc at home, but is burning the locked folders to disc going to work?

If it allows you, you should be able to

boot your XP home machine up in safe mode
log on as administrator and take ownership of the folders then grant everyone the access you want them to have.

I think backup is there but you have to install it from the CD.

its in \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP.

Moby is probably right - my experience is entirely based on XP Pro (all my machines run it)

OK im in there right now and Ive right clicked the folder, what do I need to do sorry?

properties -> Security

give what ever user it is full control

im guessing thats the stage at the mo ^^

Ok now as administrator I have taken ownership and I can see the contents! Close but now I need to make it so everyone can but I just dont know how, tis a bit confusing lol.

Hmm, can I log on as administrator in normal mode?

O your in the advanced part,

Well you could change the owner to yourself if you want.

But you need to add yourself to the permissions sections with all

in the object name, enter the account you want to have access to it. Remember to click check names before you click OK

It says select user or group and wants me to type a name rather than being able to select from a list which is a pain.


Edit, by chance I just searched a and Authenticated users was one so I used that and it worked...in safe mode anyhow. Booting up in normal now....fingers crossed.

I spoke too soon, damb. I have access to the folder now and they display the correct size but if you try and unzip, play, view it says not found [put head in hands]

Im going in to do the same but deeper.
