    Samsung SATA Burner problem

Hi guys, I have a sh-s183a which I'm having problems with. When I tried to burn or rip dvds or cds I would get an error, communication or i/o depending on the program. I tried several different programs but none would work. I changed the sata cable in case that was the problem, and made sure that the DVDs firmware was up to date. I then tried to update the chipset drivers on my motherboard as I thought this might help. After doing this my system now BSODs (Machine Check Error) when I attempt to rip/burn a dvd.

Does anyone have any ideas or is my drive knackered? (it's about a month old)

What mobo have you got ?

It's possible the drive is knackered. However, first check in the BIOS that the SATA port used by the drive is not configured as RAID.

Also, have you always had problems with this drive, or has it only gone wrong recently ?

I'm using a Dfi ultra-d, The port definitely isn't configured for RAID. Although I do have a raid array on the same sata controller (the force4 chipset). The drive is only about a month old and I'd never actually tried anything strenuous on it.

The only thing I can recall about the samsung sata drive was a problem with the size of the lead in on a burn, you should have pop over to cdfreaks and check out the sammy section

All the problems generally happened on the lead in. I'll go have a look.

Seems like a different problem. I'm thinking either the mobo is incompatible or the drive is fubar'd. I'm gonna test the drive out on another system tomorrow to see if it works there.

I'm interested to hear what happens as I'm considering getting the same SATA DVD writer for my new build.

Well I tried the burner in a different system, this one has a via chipset and was running vista. Ripping a dvd went fine, then when I burned it it seemed to be fine until I verified the burn at which point there was an error, dvd players and other computers couldn't read the disk so I'm guessing that my drive has the read in problems that other samsungs seem to have. Not very happy with the drive tbh.

Would hardware incompatibility (with my DFi) be enough reason for a refund/different brand replacement? I'll check in scan support anyway.
