Fault Query: Old Pentium II Prob

My sister's antique Asus P2 450 Mhz PC has recently been behaving erratically. Various faults can occur. One fault is
a continuous pulsing audio start up alarm and no sig on the GUI. I can clear it with a 'mains shutdown'. The other fault is where the computer is locked just before shutdown and keyboard lights flashing/no sig to GUI. It looks like the PC is at the point where the trip shutdown relay doesn't 'kick in so system left in limbo'. Has any member experienced similar probs such as these? My hunch is it could be a CPU/venting prob but not sure. The PC returns to normal function after mains shutdown so MB/CPU appear to function OK for a considerable period. Any useful advice welcome. Note the OS is WIN XP Pro.

windows XP on a pentium 2? that's just awesome

If it really is that old, might be worth opening up the case and dusting everything, especially any fans and heatsinks.. It could be overheating slightly or dust might be creeping in to places it shouldn't..? Make sure it is worth spending your time on it, you could get an old machine (but still better than a P2) for the average worker's daily salary

Yes, maybe you should strip everything out and clean them properly if you haven't done that for a long time. Additionally if I was you, I would replace mobo battery and PSU. You don't need expensive PSU btw just generic one would do for her system.

Thanks for the advice. Just a 'wee cheap service' + new mobo battery/PSU might do the trick.
