If it says "auto" then select that and change it to different value such as "400mhz". If you can't do that then it's likely you have to change jumper position and I need to know your motherboard model number so that I can check with your mobo manual.

You do not need to change it - DDR400 should work fine at 333, it's going the other way that's not always possible.

Any failure to boot isn't from this speed setting.

Sorry I was having my dinner. Oh I see I just noticed you have Dell computer I don't know if they release any information about thier original mobo(I think it is) but let me see...meanwhile if you have a digital camera with you please take some screenshot of the bios menu especially memory setting area.

BTW, are you sure the memory module is compatible with your system? I think pre-made PCs like Dell are pickier for what they take.

Hmm I'm afraid there wasn't much info about your pc on the web. I found user manual for your pc and from the look of it installing ddr400 memory is only a matter of finding a memory slot and installing the module in the right direction as easy as that, there was even no mention about changing bios setting or changing jumper positions so it should work without any further adjustment I believe once physical installation is done. I'm sorry my friend but I think you should ring up Dell support desk and ask them why you're getting this annoying beep. They should know better about thier product than anyoneelse so I think you'll have better chance getting information you need.

unless it is a xps it wont allow you to change the speed. dell bios's are completely custom and completely locked up. you wont get very far

Are you putting a 2nd memory stick in or replaceing the one that's in there?

The reason I ask is that if you're putting a 2nd (faster) stick in then an auto detect should still run at the slower speed.

If you're not putting a 2nd stick in then it does look like the BIOS is locked and you cannot change the setting. If this is the case then put both sticks in you will get more benefit from haveing more memory than 256mb than you would from running that at 400mhz
