    msmsgs.exe

I was wondering if someone could help me with stopping Windows Messenger in the background on startup.

I have checked msconfig and it is not listed in the startup applications so I was wondering where else I could find it?

I don't mean to be stating the obvious, but have you tried the options of messenger? Tools -> Options -> General Tab, untick any of the 'start messenger when windows starts' boxes.

I have, but that only stops it starting the visibly. It is being run as a background process and that is what I am trying to stop.

theres 2 different types, windows messenger - the one you get with windows xp and windows live messenger - the one you download.

if its the one with windows xp, goto add and remove programs, and goto change windows components i think, i cant remember the name exactly there should be a tickbox to remove it, apply and then your done.

Other option is to leave it installed but stop it starting with windows:

    Start>Run>MSCONFIG

Then Services Tab - Might have snuck in there?

    Hope this helps

I have decided to take spiral out's option, but instead of deleting I renamed it. That seems to do the job and I am pretty sure outlook is opening faster than it used to now.

    Thanks for your ideas.

No it doesn't... Uninstalling windows messenger is one of the first things I do after installing windows...

Live messenger works fine without it
