whenever i load my Windows Vista (home Premium) i noticed particularly the "Gadgets" on the right side load quite slowly considering i only have a few programs installed (yahoo messenger, google earth, norton internet security, picassa, sony walkman software among others). any tips or advice on how can i make the loading times faster & "smoother"?
How much memory are you running, I know they're pretty memory hungry so it 'may' be that.

I don't know how bloated Yahoo! Messenger is, but the others aren't exactly small programs.
also which of these programs do u have on startup may be u could cancel some of them.
by typing msconfig in the run bar and then going to the services & startup tabs

what startup programs on mscofig will you recommend leaving it ticked or checked from the list?
I had norton on my new vista lappy. Once i got rid of that then things were x10 faster. Why can't they learn not to make bloaty bloatware?

im not happy to get rid of my Norton Internet Security 2007 as i feel it helps me a lot in protecting & securing my PC. the Norton icon is on my taslbar below and i don't think it takes much memory. what do you think?
Norton is renouned for using more memory than alternative products. These products are often better and usually cheaper, in fact many are free.
Search the forums for firewall and anti virus. There is a thread on going at the moment about what people are using in Vista.

i personally wouldnt use it either as it is way overpriced. there are plenty of cheaper or free AV's that are just as good if not better.
Norton is utter rubbish. Use AVG and Vista Firewall. That is all you need. Never had an issue with my PC (Not using any Antvirus at the mo).
If you are willing to pay (i do) or know where to go then NOD32 is probably the best antivirus out there, it offers superb protection and the performance difference is unnoticeable, i doubt i would gain more than 2 fps from games if i turned it off. I use it on my windows xp 32bit and vista 32bit and 64bit all from the same edition of the program no lengthy configurations, u don't even need a firewall i havent had ANYTHING get to me that hasn't been me accepting files i shouldn't in about 3 years!
I have tried it all too, mcafee, panda, norton, avg the lot Eset's NOD32 is just soo much better than the rest.
Imho Kaspersky is the best...followed by NOD32 in close second.
I don't know if this relevant, but after installing a reader for the BBC RSS, my sidebar now refuses to show - it isn't listed in the processes and starting the application normally doesn't work.
Sidebar doesn't seem to play particularly nice with the networked stuff. Badly written plugin obviously, but now I can't get into it to disable it!
As I say, I don't know if that's relevant, but if your sidebar suddenly disappears, me and you are going to have to form a society!
