    Windows xp install problems

When I try to upgrade Windows XP home to Windows xp Pro on my PC it always comes up with a file copy error. I know the disk is good and so is the DVD drive and I have also tested the memory with no errors. I am assuming it is doing this because I have an overclocked processor (E6700 @ 3.25ghz). When I stress test the processor using TAT and prime 95 (2 instances) nothing has happened when I tested it for the whole night so why is the Windows installation giving me trouble?

Apparently the overclocked processor is giving me decoding errors resulting in the file copy errors when I try to install Windows and the cause for this is stress put on the processor/memory during the installation, is my system unstable or is this just a one off thing? It has been working fine for some time now under XP home.

A couple of things - don't overclock when installing Windows.

Also, with an upgrade disk, you should be able to do a fresh install of it - you just need to insert the disk you are upgrading from (XP Home in your case) when prompted.

Okay thanks for the reply, so it should be alright to return to my overclocked speed when I finish with the windows installation/upgrade?

Maybe, but it doesn't sound like its currently 100% stable to me.

In theory you should be able to install Windows with a stable overclock, but seeing as how the biggest determining factor on how long Windows takes to install nowadays is the speed of the HD & CD drive, there isn't a lot to be gained from installing on an overclock with any modern CPUs.
