AdAware 2007 - has it improved?

As a matter of course I install AdAware SE on every machine I use/repair/fiddle with. I tried AdAware 2007 when it was first released and was disappointed to such an extent I've never used it since.

Has it improved? Is AdAware SE still relatively effective when run manually?

I've recently been impressed with AVG AntiSpyware although don't like the fact that it offers real-time protection free for a month and then tries to sell an upgrade. Any comments?

My problem with Ad-aware 2007 is it insists on running services in the background just so you can start the program. If you disable the services the program fails to start :S

It's a bit 'pretty' and limited cf 1.06 and the update is weird, but it does work.
The previous version gave more choices and information; I'm still not sure about v2007.
As for the services: same with AVG AS, but I have the services Disabled, then enable them before running the app. WinServices is better than Windows' for this.

Doesnt work with vista x64. It gets part way through a scan and comes up with an error about disconnecting gracefully and closing.

That was the sole reason I stopped using Adaware ! - I just use Spybot and the MS online scanner tool for finding registry errors and spyware if any do happen to exist along with CCleaner.

It has improved but I still prefer SpyBot Search & Destroy. It's faster and in my opinion more reliable.

Re: AdAware 2007 - has it improved?

I've just been tidying my utils backup folder when I saw an old version of Ad-aware. I had heard that it doesn't update anymore and I found this to be true when I installed it and tried to update it.

I tried the first version of the 2007 Ad-aware and I hated the services. I cannot see why the services have to be used. I take it that the current build of Ad-aware 2007 still insists on stupid services being used and that they have to be running in order for it to run?

Re: AdAware 2007 - has it improved?

I've set Adaware Service to Demand start, then it doesn't run until AdAware is started - still has to be stopped manually though.

Yeah could be done with a bat file? Just find out the name of the service and run the bat file when you've finished with Ad-aware 2007. Does seem like a silly waste of time when Spybot is just a program with no services needed.

Re: AdAware 2007 - has it improved?

Ad-Aware 2007 is just as much of a pain as the previous versions and shortly after I installed it a hard drive failure required a reinstall of Windows. The hassle I had getting them to sort out a new machine code due to my misunderstanding of what they actually wanted. The real time checking was the seller for me, but it doesn't seem to do much.

I realise that a good anti piracy system is a good thing, but this is well over zealous. I am now about to upgrade this rig and for what it's worth, (Ad-Aware) I'm going back to Spybot. I must remind myself in the future not to ever bother with Ad-Aware again.
