    12 versions of svchost running?

Am running vista and have just booted into it. Went into task manager to see what was running and noticed that svchost has 12 instances and is hogging half of my resources.

    Is this right?
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Re: 12 versions of svchost running?

Yeah, that's generally not a problem - svchost is just a generic process for running Windows Services IIRC.

You can download Process Explorer from the SysInternals website and it will tell you what services are running from each of the svchost's (and PE is a very cool task manager repalcement!)

Edit: and I have 6 instances here at work.

You say its hogging half your resources, do you mean actually using 50% CPU and 50% of your RAM?

Re: 12 versions of svchost running?

Yep. I used process explorer to sort out my laptop when I had problems with a process taking up 100% cpu - which came on at random times. Turned out to be something associated with the audigy soundcard in my laptop. I dont think I could have sorted it out without Process Explorer.

Another point in the direction of the Sysinternals site (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...s/default.mspx)
