Max res of 1600x1200 on 24" widescreen? :S

    Hi all first post!

I really need some help with this

I have Just set my HP Pavilion dv9590 up and hooked it up to my 24" HP widescreen monitor which has a native res of 1920x1200.

The monitor is connected to the laptop via a VGA cable with a VGA -> DVI converter on the monitor end.

I'm also using vista's 'Dual View'. but it will only let me select a max res of 1600x1200 on my monitor. which as you can understand looks harriable and blurry. Please tell me i'm doing something wrong?

The graphics chips a Geforce 8600M GS with 256mb dedicated memory and up to 1024mb in totle shared.

I've checked nvidia's site and this chip goes well beyond 1920x1200 so i really dunno whats up.

i have downloaded the latest drives from HP's site as these arecertified nvidia ones and work 100%

I've been reading that theres'a quite a few bugs regarding drivers and resolution. Anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Edd

Your problem is the VGA cable. VGA doesn't have the bandwidth to carry such a large resolution.

sure it does. the problem is EDID (the protocol that sends details on a monitor's capabilities via plug & play) is junk on that monitor

install the driver from the CD, to make sure windows knows about its capabilities

yes they do, im running dads pc on a 24" dell at 1920x1200 with no problem. infact the only problem i had was using a crappy £2.99 vga cable as i was to lazy to swap to the dells better quality cable, perfect image now.

but to throw a stone in the works, when dads pc went down i borrowed an old laptop that only had 1024x768 on its inbuilt display, and lone behold the dell wouldnt go above 1024x768 while on the laptop. i think the cloned/spanned image is restricted to the laptops max res & may well be VGA BIOS locked to stop any issues such as overheating the GPU with the laptops not quite enough cooling.

There doesn't seem ot be a driver as such, only these:

    h-t-tp://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=uk&prodNameId=1844962&prodTypeId=382087&prodSeriesId=1844961&swLang=8&t askId=135&swEnvOID=2096[/url]
I have installed all of them and it has made no difference.

** Remove the dashes from the link above.

I have also tried just using the monitor on its own and not in dual view and have the same problem. Really don't see whats causing this?
