Asus P5K Premium won't boot after flash

I tried flashing my bios today via windows vista (version 0402). First of all I got an error after it flashed from the bios update software saying "error reading bios". Now I can't get the computer to load at all! It goes ON (fans turn) and then it shuts down after 2-3 secs and then turns ON again and does the same thing over and over.

I tried resetting it using the jumper and removing the battery. I tried removing some RAM. I tried various PSU's. NOTHING!

    Is the mobo dead?

Re: Asus P5K Premium won't boot after flash

Got the book for the board ? I have an ASUS A8N SLI and there is a way to force the BIOS to update during POST, you would require to have the BIOS on a CD to load it from, the CD that came with my motherboard has the drivers and the BIOS on it so I can always load it from that, even though it's an old version of the BIOS, it may get you running again...

I think it's something like pressing the F1 key during post, I can't remember exactly and I don't have my book with me where I am so I can't check, but have a read through the mobo manual at the BIOS section, if it has the same feature, it should say something about it.

Short of this, it seems like a bad flash, and if thats the case, then Im not sure you will be able to recover from that. It shouldn't have physically damaged the hardware on the board, but without it POST'ing, you may not be able to re-flash it again, it's something that perhaps only ASUS can do to recover the board...

Tried the ASUS forums for help ? I spent a lot of time there when I first got my ASUS board, there may be something of interest...

Re: Asus P5K Premium won't boot after flash

It's a bit too late for you, but only ever flash the bios using the mfr bios flash utility which usually runs from a floppy (or equivalent) - and secondly, if the flash doesn't work - don't switch off the computer until the problem has been fixed, otherwise you end up in the situation you are in - a dead mobo that you can't reboot to reflash.

The board isn't going to POST and the POST function is controlled by the bios - therefore dead board. Removing the battery won't help - that just resets the CMOS - the bios is in EEPROM.

A quick look at the ASUS pages indicates that you should call an ASUS hotline for advice, but I suspect you will have to RMA the board to ASUS to get it reflashed. The hotline should give you advice.

Peterb is right, the board is dead. You'll probably need a new BIOS chip. Call Asus and RMA it, they should sort it out.

Out of interest, were you flashing it for a reason or just to be 'up to date'?

If you can get the chip out, I should be able to flash it for you.

Re: Asus P5K Premium won't boot after flash

As far as I can tell, this is the nearest hotline number is in Germany :

    MB/Others: +49-2102-9599-0

I doubt if the chip is removeable - most seem to be soldered in - but if it is socketed - talk to agent!

As an aside, reflashing the BIOS is one of the riskiest things you can do to a PC - to re-iterate only ever use the mobos makers utility to reflash, always take a backup of the old bios first, and I always connect the PC via a UPS before re-flashing (a powercut during the re-flash will render it useless). And always, always read the mfr documents on the website first!

Re: Asus P5K Premium won't boot after flash

I wanted to flash it because everytime I would restart my PC (Vista 64bit) it would take several presses on the Reset/Power button to get it going (would get a black screen).

So thought this would fix it

I just purchased this board so I'll try to RMA witht he store. If not then with Asus.

Re: Asus P5K Premium won't boot after flash

BTW for future purposes, how do I flash from a USB drive since I don't have a Floppy Drive? Do I need to setup the Bios in way so that it boots from the USB drive?

Re: Asus P5K Premium won't boot after flash

Yes - set USB device as the first boot device (I assume the P5K will boot of a pen drive - if not, you would have to either add a floppy or burn the flash program and the bios binary onto a CD ROM and boot off that)

Re: Asus P5K Premium won't boot after flash

I really wish manufacturers would not bundle bios flash utility software that runs in windows. I'm of the opinion that if you don't know how to do it from a floppy (or usb nowadays) using the manufacturers utility then you shouldn't be doing it at all.

I'm surprised that board manufacturers are now soldering their bios chips, I suppose it's cheaper. Anyway I hope you get it sorted either way.
