    UPS questions

    Hi all,

I managed to bag an APC 1500VA Smart UPS and it powers/protects my main rig, Q6600 (3.6GHz), 6 GIG RAM, 10 hard drives, 2 optical, 8 Nexus 120mm fans, DDC Ultra pump and lastly, MSI 7900 GTO gfx.

The load never only hits 2 bars on the indicator (33%) and will give me something like 44 minutes on battery.

My 2nd rig, I would like to add to the UPS is an E6600 (3.6GHz), 4 GIG RAM, 9 hard drives, 1 optical, 6 Nexus 120mm fans, DDC pump and lastly, X800 GTO2 gfx.

    My questions are:
    a) I'm guessing I could add the E6600 (2nd rig) comfortably on the 1500VA Smart-UPS?
    b) If I only had the main rig, could I get away with say an 800VA UPS?
    c) The power agent has sent me a number of e-mail warnings of 'Extended Overvoltage on Agent-PC'. I'm guessing this means that the supply into the room, is >240v for an extended period rather than the APC is sending out >240v to the rig connected to it, i.e., the UPS is smoothing down the voltage rather than breaking and kicking to high a voltage out?

Could someone confirm/refute the above and suggest best options (prolly keep the 1500VA one)

    Thanks and Merry Xmas

    Re: UPS questions

Whats the power agent? I'm guessing something on the UPS?

1500VA is just a measure of energy. Its possible that the unit is already out of spec. Your rig will be quite demanding, perhaps you should contact the manufacturer of the unit?

I don't see how you can pull more then 240V from the unit. You can pull more amps than the UPS wants to give.

    Re: UPS questions

Power agent is the PC attached to it with the software loaded. I hink the software talks to the UPS and reports back, so not sure whether the over voltage is on the UPS or the PC?

I'll try APC and thanks for the reply sir

    Re: UPS questions

no worries, i hope you get it sorted.

There should be some sort of tech spec that tells you what sort of power levels the unit is able to sustain. I'll mark this thread so I can read your reply. I don't have a UPS yet, but am interested in them (it may be New Year before I get back here).
