    Vista Install Crashing On Install

Well got my new hard drive up and running placed my vista CD into the CD-Rom drive and for the last few hours it has got to different points during installation in which it will freeze, usually at this point *screenshot below*or the next screen with a whole black background with the Vista logo...
If anyone can help me would be very much appreciated!

if you could list complete build specs, it'd be a lot easier to see what's wrong...

hit version of vista, and have you tried XP?

Re: Vista Install Crashing On Install

    Sorry forgot that...

    Setup;
    Asus A8V-VM
    7600GT
    2 x 1Gb G-Skill Ram
    AMD Athlon X2 4600
    Western Digital SATA 250GB

It's 32bit Vista Ultimate but have also tried Home Premium. Have an XP CD here but it's too scraped up and going to get a CD tomorrow to copy it onto.

Re: Vista Install Crashing On Install

Well after 4/5 hours of trying it has finally came on though i'm worried as to why it kept freezing

EDIT: Scrub that it's freezing again. It either freezes at the black screen with the logo or actually allows me onto the desktop. It is now not installing anything or asking for details so it has been intalled onto the hard drive alright though worried why it's freezing as just got it back from computer place saying everything was fine (bar the hard drive which i purchased seperately).

I would say it is your Hard drive mate. Failing that, try a different CD / DVD Drive? Also, try installing it with one stick of ram to see if the ram is faulty.

Re: Vista Install Crashing On Install

Took out the ram, still nothing. Then tried the graphics card and with the graphics card freezing each time it loads up when in. Downloaded the new driver off my brother's PC and brought it in but during installation it says that i need the graphics card in the PC to install it for some reason? Going to have a go tomorrow at windows update and seeing if that will sort it out.

Re: Vista Install Crashing On Install

I had a similar problem when I got my new WD raptor drive. Installation went fine up to the same place where you got, then it crashes. After a few crashes it didn't boot up anymore. But when I booted up from another drive it was recognised in windows, I then did the quick and extended tests using the WD diagnostic toolset on their website. It failed both, but when I did the last test (write zeros) it passed it and then the other tests passed when i did them again.

The write zeros test completely overwrites your hdd with zeros, so you lose all of your data.... I'm guessing you formatted your hdd during the windows installation like me.

I've installed vista on the hdd again and it now boots up and seems to be running fine apart from that it seems really slow for a raptor. I've contacted WD again to see if the hdd is faulty.

Re: Vista Install Crashing On Install

Cheers Rufeo but it's actually working fine atm without a graphics card, installed all the updates and stuff, stuck it in the graphics card and yet again it freezes at the Vista logo with the black background! Is there anyway to install the drivers for the 7600GT without having to have it currently in the PC?

I don't think there is a way as the drivers these days cover a range of cards so it detects the card and install the required files.

Is your system overclocked and what PSU do you have?

Re: Vista Install Crashing On Install

Nope no overclocking done to it. It's a bog standard Ace 480W PSU

Vista will freeze though when you click on more graphics intense applications but for just browsing the internet it is working fine (though a little sore on the eyes) without a graphics card.

EDIT: Finally got the drivers to install but the same problem, freezes after a minute or so. Put in another hard drive, got Vista installed on it and the same problem of freezing.
Think i'm just going to need to go back to good old XP until Vista sorts the bugs out....

    Its a conflict.
I dont think Vista is the total problem...its obvious something isnt right elsewhere and Vista is just bringing it to the fore.

Re: Vista Install Crashing On Install

Got XP up and running on both hard drives for 2-3 hours each without freezing, put in the graphics card and within 10mins freezes. In XP though it will freeze either way (though i think it's because Vista needs a graphics card to support it?) so think it is the graphics card after all then as i have all the latest drivers installed on it already.
