    Handy Apps...

So, I was wondering. Do any of you have any 'handy apps' that you use for system cleanup etc.? I'm quite curious, because the amount of times someone has asked me to 'speed up' their machine is ridiculous. All I end up doing is cleaning out temp files and then running a defrag with the swap file disabled....

    Anyone?

most of the apps do things you can easily do yourself except maybe registry defragger but i would advise tuneup utilities its not exactly free but it has a 30 day trial and it does a lot more than cleaning including skinning XP. It has timers to automatically clean your system daily to keep it at full speed.

    Re: Handy Apps...

I can highly recommend the excellent CCleaner
formerly crap cleaner which is free available here
i linked to the slim version because the normal one comes with a toolbar (i hate toolbars lol) you can remove it though or just grab slim that doesnt include it at all.

    CCleaner - Downloading Slim...

other good alternative's not so free would be as vhero said or Ace Utilities

other than that a defrag as you said, i schedule mine over night.

windows defender is quite handy for the software explorer you can see everything that loads at start-up and disable non-essential stuff. Might help?

    Re: Handy Apps...

One app. I find really handy, though not a clean up app. per se, is autoruns (AutoRuns for Windows.) I think it's one of sysinternals apps which microsoft accquired, it is excellent for finding out exactly what is running on your pc, I use it mostly for stopping things from starting when windows boots (thus clearing alot of my system tray and system memory.)

    Well worth the £00.00 costs.

I'm hoping these are all small(ish) apps that I can run off my 2GB U3 thumbdrive...?

I'm loving the Defraggler app, from the same people that make CCleaner.

WinDirStar for manually clearing out your stuff. Useful for seeing where the bulk of your storage is being taken up.
