    HD on PC monitors.

I have been wondering about HD.

720p has got me wondering the most.
If 720p resolution is 1280 x 720 and 1080p is 1920×1080 then how does this scale?

If I had a monitor with a resolution of 1680 x 1050 and displayed HD on it how would that work?
would it just stretch out 720p across the screen and if so, would it look make the image look more crappy like when you display a low resolution on high res monitor?

    I have a 1440 x 900 monitor\TV.

Which do you think would look better on my monitor:

    720p or VGA 1360 x 768?

    Re: HD on PC monitors.

firstly, there's the aspect ratio issue - televisions are 16:9, monitors are 16:10, so you should always have black borders at the top & bottom if scaling properly

secondly, the scaling. yes, it needs to scale it to fit the res - but it still looks pretty good. consider that most hdtvs on the market (definitely those smaller than 37") are 1366x768, so ALL inputs need to be scaled

    Re: HD on PC monitors.

I'm running an XBox 360 on this monitor (1440 x 900) via HDMI.

The picture looks great, no problems there.

The resolution with the VGA cable that I think would be best is 1360 x 768.

As far as I can tell this is a higher resolution than 720p and probably wouldn't need to be stretch or rescaled on my monitor, just a black border.

But I also realize that with 720p via HDMI that it is a digital connection as opposed to VGA analouge. How much of a difference it'll make I do not know.

Monitors are a side of PC hardware I have overlooked.
Do you think that with a VGA cable I would get a better picture than as I am now with 720p?

Also, going back to 1680 x 1050, would I be right in thinking that HD wouldn't really offer a better picture than it would on my 1440 x 900. It would just be 720p scaled up even more?

    Thanks.

Basically if your using HDMI then no vga wont be better, most 1680*1050 monitors will downscale 1920*1080(1080p) and fit it to the screen. So i would select 1080P over 720p
