driver error evga 8800gt with cod4

    hey guys,

i'm a bit stuck here, i have an evga 8800gt superoverclocked and everytime i play COD4 it will suddenly freeze up on me and then would go back normal if i waited long enough. i tried going into windows while its happening and i saw in the task bar it says ".... driver error" and it would go away as soon as it stop freezing.

my system is running vista at the moment. i tried putting in a xfx 8800gt (slightly lower clock rate) and its running smoothly on the same settings. is my evga card faulty? or can i flash the firmware to test it out?

Any advise would be much appreciated

    cheers

can u underclock it and test, also wot drivers u using. I have an AlphaDog XXX and play over 10hrs of COD4 a week (plus host the server we play on) and havent seen the behaviour you mention. That being said I did have to upgrade from reference cooling as it was getting a little toasty. I also have a 22" screen I assume u play at 1680x1050. I am only running an E6600 but that shouldnt make much difference as the game is single threaded. I also turn up all the textures and AA etc to max values

that's the thing i have the standard optimized settings for the evga and i am only playing on a 19" wide screen. i thought it was the drivers so i updated to the latest nvidia drivers. by the way how do you underclock it?

also will changing the reference cooler make a difference?

by the way it freezes at the beginning when you have to do the trail. like maybe 1 minute into the game.

Download Rivatuner and log the temperatures at which it crashes. After that underclock the card down to standard 8800GT speeds and see if that improves stability. If it does then its likely your card is faulty.

I assume you have the latest COD 4 patch installed?

Re: driver error evga 8800gt with cod4

hey guys i tried logging the temperatures and the highest it went was 89C is that too high? i still get the windows driver error

The error displayed in windows is

Display driver stopped responding and has recovered
Displat driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

FINALLY! I've fixed it! all I did was update the to the latest firmware from evga's website. just in case anyone else have the same problem with other evga cards. turns out its quite a common issue.
