    Broadband problem.

    Hi there.

Well I got broadband installed just over a week ago, and im currently in that ten day stabilisation period. Unfortunately, due to what I think was some major mistakes by me, my broadband speed has become really slow. Its currently running at 352kbps and the IP profile is nearly the same speed.

I only got a few days to go and I dont want my BB speed to be stuck on 352kbps, when I know my line can take a lot more. Is there any tips you can give me to help get the speed up?

    Thanks!

Edit: Oh the mistakes I made was rebooting my router via the plug. A few times a day, apparently that is not what im supposed to do.

    Re: Broadband problem.

Well when I first got it, it started at 3.5mbps. Then it went down to 1.5, then to 800kbps, 500 kbps and now im at 352kbps.

Its basically fluctuating one way. I get tiny increases if I reboot the modem enough times, but not too much difference anyway.

    Re: Broadband problem.

Thats odd, I have 8mb broadband, but it will only download at up to 150kbps, but thats because of a bad line, and it has always been that way.

Are you sure that it is not the websites you are downloading from or the time of day that you are downloading at

Have you tried to resynch the modem? switch it off for about an hour then turn it back on again.

    Ransimton,

The best solution for this would be to contact your broadband provider, advise them what has happened and they should be able to restart the training period.

I had to do this recently with Be* as I had a slight fault on the line which was adding noise to the line which was effecting the SNR margin and therefore the sync speed.

I was getting 8.2mb with the fault and since they have retrained the line now get 12.2mb

Sounds great, thanks Carl and everyone else.

So if I am able to get the ten day period to restart. What would be the best thing to do, to make sure I get a good speed by the end of it?

Get your router in the test socket with everything off the line will get you the best speeds.

    Who is your isp?

    Re: Broadband problem.

    Ouch

Do they not offer their cable in your area?

    What Router are you using?

TO get the best out of a phone line you really need to unplug all the extensions in the house and run the router from the master socket.

Well if you need the extensions if you look at adslnation and get their ssfp xte-2005 This will filter off all the extensions at the master socket and let u plug the router in strraight away

Buit does constrain having your router next to the master socket. If you get good quality filters (cost about £6.00 each, they will fine (remeber they are needed wherever anything is plugged into the phone line, skyboxres, fax machines etc).

And if you do get the training period reset, just leave the router alone for the ten days! One reset might not matter, but if you are continually resetting it, the exchange interprets that as poor line and will reduce the speeds to try and find a stable speed. (It appears to try faster speeds from time to time after the training period) but it takes a while.)

You will have to go through your ISP who will get BT to reset your ADSL speed profile - which restarts the training process.

    Re: Broadband problem.

Good quality filters may help a bit but to get the best speeds on your line you need to filter it off at the master socket other wise the extensions will introduce extra noise which will lower the speed

If the extensions are introducing extra noise, this will be via the bell wire which is not needed in 99% of installations.

The main purpose of the ADSL filter is to prevent the ADSL signal from interefering with teh baseband (voice) signal, but the proper (BT spec) filters also impedance match the ADSL side, and this improves the noise immunity.

If you are really concerned about introducing noise, use cat5 for the extension cabling, but you only really need to do this under marginal line conditions, when the ADSL signal is attenuated, that noise becomes a significant factor in the S/N ratio.

Filtering at the faceplate does save on the hassle of ensuring that all extensions are filtered separately (and faceplate filters are generally pretty good, but as I said earlier, the downside is that the router needs to be located there, which may not be convenient.

    Re: Broadband problem.

The OP said he wanted to get the speed up.

The best way to get the speed up is to remove all internal wiring. BT only gaurentee the BB signal up to the master test socket if an NTE5 has been fitted that is.

I have seen Extensions make huge amounts of difference on lines. I was out at a customers premises jsut a couple of weeks ago where they couldnt get a connection from the extension even using a filter we took out yet when we plugged into the test socket the EU was getting close to 2.5 meg so that kind of shows that internal wiring makes a big difference.
