Best way to calibrate LG 226 WTQ on an XFX 8800 GTS?

    Hello all.
I'm hoping someone can help me out here as I'm going a bit mental.

What is the best way to calibrate this combination of hardware?

I've been reading all sorts of guides and advice about colour calibration for LCD's but I just cannot get it right with my monitor. So I'm hoping there are some users out there of the LG 226 WTQ monitor plugged into an XFX 8800GTS that can assist or shed some light.

I read all sorts of people raving about the monitor & how the colour reproduction is fantastic and it's amazing for games and movies, but I just can't seem to get it to be decent.
I've come from a 17" CRT that was brilliant, and so comparing the washed out colours of the LCD is painful. When I seem to get one group of colours right, another set look wrong, it's very frustrating.
I've used an ICC Profile I found posted by some experts at TomsHardware, I've tried using the ForteManager software that came with the monitor, I've tried various guides, but I just can't seem to find the right calibration.
And by right calibration I mean something that resembles the colours my CRT produces.

    Apologies for the waffle!

    Can anyone help?

You'll never match a CRT so give that one up for starters. Without a hardware callibrator all you can do is adjust the gamma and colour channels so that you can see as much as possible on the test images that those kind of sites show up - the colours may be completely unrealistic, but you'll be able to distinguish them from each other, which is the best you can do without a callibrator.

To get vivid colours on an LCD you'll have to artificially inflate the colour values (and your nvidia control panel will have a digital vibrance option specifically for this) but you will always clip or reduce the number of colours distinguishable by doing so.

My only word of comfort is that as long as you don't use a CRT again your eyes will adjust quite quickly and you'll soon think your LCD display is wonderful.

edit: Something you might want to try is going into the service menu (posts about this elsewhere on the forums for your monitor) and make sure the panel is set to the right one (or try a different one). Also turning off RTC might help improve colours at the expense of response time (again, your eyes will adjust to this as well).
