How To Check The ISP On A Line

Moving into a new house and have got the BT line set up with a phone number but I think there is already broadband on the line. Is there any way to check what broadband service if any is on there, bar hooking up a router and going online as I'm at work at the moment.

    From http://www.adslchecker.bt.com/pls/adsl

If you do not know who the current Service Provider is, please contact your new Service Provider, who would be able to help you to resolve this issue.
I'd imagine that BT Wholesale would have the information, but it sounds like you just choose your new ISP and let them deal with it.

I think BT outreach cease broadband on a line when the account details change. (Regardless of who the ISP is)

I havent got a router on me but can I plug my PC straight into the broadband phone socket and connect, assuming there is a connection on there, or do I need a router?

A modem (which may or may not be built into a router) is needed to connect to an ADSL line. You will also need your ISPs username and password to authenticate to them. (This is not the same as a modem used for dial up connections)

I had "tag on line" a month ago for my newly provisioned BT line

As there is no longer any public phone number for BT Wholesale you have to ask the ISP you are planning to go with to sort it.

This took me a few phone calls and emails to escalate the problem, as muppet call centre staff kept incorrectly insisting "it's your phone line and you need to contact BT".

Apparently cause of the problem was that my new phone number was incorrectly flagged in BTs database. There actually wasn't an existing ADSL service on the phone line.
