I think i may have blown my power supply when adding a new graphics card

hey guy's,
i own a compaq desk top its about 2 years old i have 2 gig ram a 4600 64x2 amd and every normal pc gadget hooked up to it( mic, cam, yada yada yada). Recently i tried to add a nvidia 6200 le 256 mb ddr2 graphics card. This is all on a 250 watt power supply. When i first put it in it seemed obvious that it was drawing too much power for supply. comps fan sounded half speed ans so on. i removed it and it started up fine. i recived sme bad advice and tried to put it in again. did the same thing. coulnd't fully start up again tried and in middle it just stops after windows loading screen. removed card but now the comp stays like it is having too much power drawn from it and stops after the windows loading screen. i ordered a new 450 watt supply but now i am wondering if i jumped to conclusion. please help me.

I'd have thought the 6200le would be fine on a 250W continuous rating supply. I know I used to run an FX5700 on one without a problem.

The fact that you are getting as far as the windows loading screen also suggests to me you don't have a power problem. Can you boot up in safe mode? (press F8 during the boot sequence)

yeah in safe mode pretty much the same thing happens pretty much. does a scroll down quick of some stuff but stops soon after and then nothing. still the computr making half the sund it udsualy does fan seeming ly running slow. to add to my original post the hard drive kick on sound doesn't happen( well i am pretty sure but atm i am not in front of my computer so i am relying on y memory when i get home i will isten for it again)

So could the problem be with your hard drive? Hence lack of HDD noise and windows crashing part way through loading?

It might not even be physically damaged - the install might have just corrupted.

First thing to try is unplugging and replugging in the all the HDD related cables - you might have just dislodged them removing the gfx card.
