Dat is perfictally capable of internet access, and word. 17" screen, nice when you are using it, but will you be lugging it arround all day, cos its gonna be big.
No wont be luggin around much mainly be at home in bedroom are you thinking the smaller size screen may be best then ? is the inspiron 1720 better than a toshiba or sony of its kind ?

@OP
as others have said why a laptop specifically? especially if it is going to be sat on a desk? as if something goes wrong with a desktop it's generally easier to fix and alot cheaper...
obviously if you just want it because it looks cleaner then that is personal preference
Hi, yes its going in my room which hasnt got a desk and no room for it i just wondered whether the dell inspirons were best value for money around the £600 mark ?
Technically the Vostro 1700 is just a black Inspiron 1720.
The 1710 is a new chassis though.
£600 you can also look at the Dell Studio 17
I'd check out a few websites for deals - I've just advised my Dad and Sister on laptops and they both found some excellent deals on ebuyer. One was an ASUS and the other HP, both for around £350.
I think you're paying too much @ £600if your only needing word and web.
dell are good for basic stuff.
If you plan to upgrade, get a custom build one.
I use an Inspiron 1520 - thought the 1720 was a little too big.
The laptop itself is great, does exactly what I need it to do. The two obvious downsides are battery life and weight. It's too heavy to carry around regularly, so it gets used as more of a portable desktop than it does a laptop.
Can't fault it for performance and value for money, though.
