Dell XPS M1710 (1st Gen) Broken Motherboard

I have a 1st generation M1710 latop, altho unfortunetly the motherboard has died on me and the thing won't turn on at all. I've been told at a repair shop it would cost around £600 to fix this - is that true? I'm not desperate for another laptop and would rather buy a new desktop pc than pay to repair it if it's going to cost £600.

Do these things normally sell on eBay for spare parts? Any estimates on how to price something like this?

    Thanks.

Pretty much what it can costs yeah. Generally if an older laptop like that fails and is still under warranty by dell you would be given a new one as it's pretty uneconimcal to repair them.

You can get this for £550 lol

Re: Dell XPS M1710 (1st Gen) Broken Motherboard

I've never heard of laptop motherboards dying yet...

But for £600, yeah, get a new laptop/desktop.
Check out the DELL outlet for some goods deals now and again (i'm keeping an eye on for a good deal/spec/price for the Inspiron XPS M1530).

And dont forget (sorry if I am underestimating your knowledge) that you can pull your HD out of your broken laptop to retrieve your data etc.

I've had plenty of HP motherboards Die. The term is slightly different in laptops I think. I've had one board written off because the socket for the power supply's pin broke.

1 year out of warranty, don't really need anything off the HDD - time to get a desktop methinks!

Not really, probably best to just let them bid. It might be a case of people only want a single part too, so if you are comfortable with taking it apart yourself it may be worth doing. The RAM and HDD can be taken out and sold easily enough. The screen shouldn't be too difficult to remove. Keyboard is normally quite easy and the chassis itself might even fetch something if it's in good condition

What CPU does it have because they are worth a fair bit on their own
