    Cheap laptop for travelling

    Hi

My boyf and i are going travelling next year and are looking for a second hand/new cheap laptop for him to run his music programs from (he is a producer) - the programs are reason and sound forge.

We appreciate that this may get stolen whilst we are away which is why we are looking for a cheap one (£150), rather than take our expensive one.

Does anyone have any tips of the best one to get/where to shop - or do youn think ebay would be our best bet...?

    Thanks Lu

Problem/choice you need to make is thatcheap laptops aren't usually very robust and don't last very long travelling (by the time they have been bounced around airport trolleys, in and out of overhead lockers etc) but robust ones are expensive. On the other hand, the value probably isn't in the hardware, but the data that it contains.

If it is a cheap laptop you wnat, look at some of the Dells, or the 'unbranded' ones from places like novatech. If it is robust, look at the Panasonic Toughbooks or the Ergo range.

You might want a look at this too - seems good value for money, although don't expect it to be as rugged as the other two brands I mentioned!

This link may be useful - and not just for rugged laptops

Finally, bearing in mind it is that data that is valuable, take separate storage devices - USB sticks - and carry them separately from the laptop - ideally back up twice and keep the backups separate - yiu carry one, BF carries the other. Laptops can be replaced - the data (and his creative output!) can't!
