AVG Free Problems

Anyone else been having problems with AVG recently? I've had problems getting updates recently (about a week) and a number of other people have had "Invalid Update Control CTF File" Errors. I have found the solution to this here but it is frustrating and I'm losing confidence in their software.

Maybe it's time to move away from AVG? Any suggestions for free AV software. Are Avast and AntiVir still reasonable?

Avast is still avaliable and is my personal choice for a free av program.

Yep , having same problem with AVG 8 . Keep trying for an update and it seems to work after about 3 attempts. I usually use Kaspersky and still have a couple of keys left but they have updated there software now so I doubt whether my 2 keys will work any more . It was 3 keys for 1 year.

If it is a genuine key it works. I have 1key for KAV7 and upgraded free to 2009. If you install the software and use the key you can definetely upgrade it

I used to use AVG about 3-4 years ago, but moved to AntiVir and never had any problems - it seems to sit there and do it's job. I also think it's more about common sense - I know too many people who open up random attachments or download dodgy stuff with files that say "open this to install.exe"

same here, AVG update errors, I have also seen a few other people with the same issue.

If it is a genuine key it works. I have 1key for KAV7 and upgraded free to 2009. If you install the software and use the key you can definetely upgrade it

It's a genuine key alright but when I went onto the site it offers me 2009 now not 2007 . Maybe I can use the key on 2009 I don't know ? or I may have to find a link to 2007 somewhere. The drive that I had 2007 on, is in a crashed state atm . I'll have to try and do a recovery with the xp disc or if the fails a complete reformat.

a kaspersky key works across all versions, they would rather you use the latest unlike other AV companies that want to screw you out a few more quid.

If its a key you got for the 2007 version then yes you can use it with the 2009 version.

Had that problem last week on my laptop, but i removed avg and then dl it again from the site! Its now working ok.

It's on the AVG forums - It's a known issue. Same here.
