To buy or not to buy?

It says on the main page it's for advisory help as well, so thought I should put this here, sorry if it's in the wrong area though.

Well basically not very long ago I bought myself an AMD Athlon X2 7750 BE, however I've had nothing but problems with it, if I overclock it, it won't boot next time without clearing the CMOS, now don't overclock but whats the point in the Black Edition if it won't overclock? I think this may be to do with the fact that on the compatability charts this particular CPU isn't listed for my mobo, but I chanced it anyway.

Now the question, I recently got a nice sum of money and was wondering how much of a performance boost I could expect from an AMD Phenom II X4 920, and yes this CPU is listed as compatible, just wondering is this CPU good bang for buck, I've read reviews that indicate it's pretty good especially compared to the original Phenoms. So is quad core goodness worth the extra either for now, or for the future?

I don't know much about either processor but I was wondering what you want the processor for. Would you be mainly gaming, multitasking, etc. etc.?

Mainly gaming, multitasking, image editing, occasional video editing, speed and to future proof it, which is why I thought a quad core would be a step in the right direction as programs and games etc. are now starting to take advantage of it, and it seems that in a few months to maybe a year a quad core will be the norm.

TBH everyone does say that quad-core is the right way to go and whatever happens it won't be a downgrade!
Sorry I don't have actual knowledge of the CPUs in question, but have you thought about the 940? I think that is meant to be a better overclocker. Might be worth it if you can wring out a bit more performance from it, especially if it's for future-proofing.

I'm heading down dual-core avenue. Hopefully it'll get cheaper in quad-cores and I'll pick some up off ebay.
