Laptop Failure

My friend is having trouble with his laptop. Every now and again, everything will crash/freeze/"not responding".. from internet explorer to windows explorer, which requires a hard restart. After completely reinstalling the lot, inc. Windows. Its exactly the same. This lead us to believe it was a hardware fault. He has now contacted HP, but you know how slow manufacturers can be. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas he could try to resolve the problem a little faster?

Test with alternate sticks of RAM if it has more than one..

install a demo of everest ultimate edition (google it) and heck the cpu/chipset temps

Or HWMonitor from cpuid.com which is freeware and only needs to be unzipped.
