AAO Wont turn on without power cable

Ok... So Im fairly good with computers and have done repair work for numerous people along with building countless machines, but Ive never done anything with laptops/netbooks until this latest venture with the AAO.

Basically, the netbook will only turn on if the power cable is plugged in and if you disconnect power whilst it is running then the netbook dies. (i.e. it seems to have become a desktop). Despite this, when the battery is connected, you can see the charge status and it does definitely charge - went from 30% up to 98%. Am I missing something or is this what you get for buying a netbook from ASDA?

Sounds like a loose connection somewhere - this isn't normal

Could be a dud battery or fact that the battery is not charging or not holding its charge(no matters what the indications of charge are). Notebooks from Asda should be as good as anywhere else really. Main thing with these lappies/notebooks is that its generally the battery that caves first .

Have you tried removing the battery, cleaning the contacts (use a normal eraser) and reseating the battery?

Well it seems that the battery is dead since although it appears to charge, if you disconnect power and then reconnect it then the battery starts charging again.

Quite impressed with Acer though, they said they would take the netbook back and pay for all expenses in returning it to them. They also said if I leave my extra 1Gb of RAM in the laptop then they will make sure it does not get removed. Hoping they will collect it later this week, though I have no idea how long they will have it for...

Just to close this off I thought I would highlight how amazing Acer have been on this repair.

On Tuesday I created some time in my diary to arrange a collection, the netbook was collected the next day (Wednesday) at 6pm. I got an email from them on Thursday lunchtime saying it had been received and another on Thursday evening to say they were looking at the netbook. I then got another email this morning with a DHL tracking number for next day delivery, if it wasnt the weekend tomorrow I would have it back within 3 days! I think that is AMAZING service by my books!
