    Help needed

Hi I am a post graduate student doing market research for an IT company (UK) who specialise in Web Content management systems (CMS) They now plan to market the same through Software as a service delivery model and plan to target the web designers and developers. So do you think it is viable an option. Please do advice me on how I could go about gathering that information.

    Many Thanks.
PS: Sorry if I have posted it in the wrong forum

I hope you understand that there are so many CMS systems out there that you are unlikely to get many sales.

You will be much better off making client specific websites and using your CMS as a backend to facilate all, or part, of the content within the client specific enviroment.

    Re: Help needed

    Hey
Thank you for the reply. That is what they are currently into. They do manage all the content for a few companies. They just want to widen their horizon. Sorry I am not from an IT background but from they say it is more than a CMS (Wildfire Spark) and I am meant to find out is if there is a market for it.
This is my first job really and i was hoping to get few ideas to get around to it

    Re: Help needed

There are so many really well developed CMS solutions that are freely available to all, and do not require any previous development experience to use, i find it hard to see how a 'paid for' CMS solution will hold up against the free competition when your target market is web developers, or users who are otherwise IT savvy. It just doesn't make sense.

If its going to work you need to focus on value added features, what makes your CMS solution shine above the rest?

    Re: Help needed

    Thanx Pete
Don't mind my ignorance but do you not end up paying for support and upgrades an the open source CMS? From what I have heard joomla does require a bit of technical knowledge? or have I gotten the whole thing wrong? And if they were to deliver it through SaaS you would not have to pay anything for support, upgrades. All they are looking at just now is a monthly subscription fee and the web designers could sell it at any price they wanted and hence the market research and since i am new I cant seem to get around to it.

Fairly sure I used Joomla a few years ago, and Google answered any problems I had?

    Re: Help needed

@whiteGiant: So you would suggest it might not be a good idea to go SaaS with an in house CMS as people are quite happy with the open source cms available?

    Re: Help needed

I think what people are trying to get across is the fact that your company is looking for a way to market and sell a CMS when there are alternatives out there for free. Why would people pay for a service they can get for free

Thank you all for your reply.
Would be great if you could a take a minute and fill this out for me. Its just 7 simple multiple choice question. They plan to use this for the statistics. basically wanting to know if you would opt for SaaS or not.

    Thank you
