    Laptop power adaptor keeps burning

its a 5 year old advent laptop, hasnt missed a beat in those years but it does get very hot, but the original power supply died recently and the top of lead where there is plastic sorrounding was all burnt, so a 'new' second adaptor was bought for it and this one has burned on the top, altho it is still working intermittinly, any ideas on what the problem might be? would it be worth replacing it with the original model adaptor?

Worth a try i would say. Maybe there is a connection problem or the wrong adapter is being used?

is the power socket loose on the laptop? could be short on the socket and its damaging the power supply.
i've seen a few advents with loose and damaged sockets. replacement can be brought from ebay i think i;ve seen but fitting will be the tricky bit.

what do you mean by power socket? do you mean this:

it doesnt appear to be broken, cos the new adaptor did work but its tsopped working and its burnt it also gives out electric current, but original stopped working too and the top lead was burnt, would a loose power socket cause this?

i dont mind fitting it if it is the problem. will be buying a original replacement adaptor tho, to see how that goes.

Re: Laptop power adaptor keeps burning

If you're confident enough in doing so, take the laptop apart and check if there's any burning on the PCB around the power connector.
If there is then it could be an idea to replace the connector entirely.

Re: Laptop power adaptor keeps burning

thats the socket i'm talking about. I see allot of laptops with very loose / broken sockets. away to check is make sure the plug has no movement when inserted in the laptop. If you look at the socket move the plug and see if the whole socket moved.
I've never seen a burnt power supply before i;ve had dead ones before that give no power out.

Re: Laptop power adaptor keeps burning

have both power supplies done exactly the samething? for the plug to melt to me it points to a short accross the plug. i would consider looking inside the laptop for damage if you ok with taking it apart..

Re: Laptop power adaptor keeps burning

my bets the jack in the laptops nearly worked free so all the currents going through a very small area of solder causing extreme heat and the burning.

easy fix if you can solder

Re: Laptop power adaptor keeps burning

after seeing that i would defo say its a broken socket on the laptop or a short somewhere in the laptop. has the laptop had anything spilt on it or been dropped at all? as if its not the socket there most be some other hardware fault.

Re: Laptop power adaptor keeps burning

Don't think anything has been spilt on it or its been dropped, but will have to check that over, but i did open up the case and checked the socket again and there is infact some movement there, not sure if its normal movement or if the thing is actually loose, but there is some burn marks on the inside of the socket, very small though, i guess that could be the fault, will probably have to take the whole thing out to check properly.

Re: Laptop power adaptor keeps burning

here's where i get my sockets from, a quick note though if your lappy currently has a pj15 socket get a pj11 instead as it's easier to solder and more reliable

    http://www.laptopandspares.co.uk/

also I do hope you are not still using the laptop as at worst it is a fire hazard and at best you will burn a wacking great hole in the pcb which you don't want

also that guide while alright don't go pulling on the socket with your fingers while heating it like that tool is depicting in the pics or your fingers will object by blistering
