    PC Restarts

    Hey all,

Just looking for some tech help.

    Got little shuttle/ PC here.

    1Gb Ram
    2Ghz CPU
    GFX Card (Cant remember which)
    Dont even know the mobo.

Anyway, look at the specs it should run SIMS 2 fine, however when my lil sister tries to load SIMS 2, the loading screen comes up and then closes and then the thing restarts.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Sound card.. check the drivers on that. Sound card's love to chuck you back to desktop.

If need be, turn it OFF in bios.. then see if the game runs without sound. If it does, you've found the culprit.

But a PC restart sounds as much like duff ram... take sticks out and re try.

Download a copy of Memtest86+ (google for it) and run that from a CD - that will diagnose any memory problems.

Try another 3D game or stress testing program to isolate the problem to Sims 2 (or not).

I'm assuming you mean bug, the game has ran on another PC fine and without problems. So it isnt the game.

Try another 3D game or stress testing program to isolate the problem to Sims 2 (or not).
Not really got any other 3D games that will run on the PC and dont want to stress test as I dont think its needed, especially not at the moment.

Download a copy of Memtest86+ (google for it) and run that from a CD - that will diagnose any memory problems.
    - Have used this before and think I still have a copy at home, will test this tonight.

Sound card.. check the drivers on that. Sound card's love to chuck you back to desktop.

But a PC restart sounds as much like duff ram... take sticks out and re try.
    - Will MemTest it tonight and see what happens.
If this returns no errors, then I will update Sound Card drivers and Graphics Card Drivers.
If this doesnt work I will try using the onboard.
Then if the above doesnt work, I will throw it out the window!

    Re: PC Restarts

Just a bit of an update, decided to check event viewer for error codes, found one.

    Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 bf0c6ad5, parameter3 b977d2e0, parameter4 00000000.

Having a quick google a few places seem to relate this to memory, however I am not trusting just what has been said on the internet, will still/ i am still doing what I have said.

    Damn thing better work

    Re: PC Restarts

Fixed! Update the gfx drivers, which also required newer version of .net framework, tried the game and it loaded without any issues!.
    Cheers for the help!

    Re: PC Restarts

    Indeed, was disappointed though.
Had geared myself for some trouble shooting and problem solving, so when it worked first time around I was like ahh come on.
But then was happy that it didn't take all night. xD

Vit0 suggested this fix in the first post!

Graphics drivers can be a real nightmare sometimes - causing all sort's of issues.
