PC wont boot but motherboard shows power??

    Hi Everyone,

I just rebuilt my rig inside my Lian Li V2010 the only difference between this and the previous is where the motherboard is now mounted upside down the 4 pin ATX power lead would'nt reach so I used a extension 4 pin atx cable for it to reach and I now have my new Sycthe Mugen 2 Heatsink mounted which I purchased from Scan recently.

But the motherboard shows a green power light but it just wont power on!!

I have made sure everything is seated properly and that the cables are all correctly conected but it still just shows a green light on the motherboard but when I press the power button nothing!!

The Motherboard is a Asus P5N-E SLI and i'm using a Intel Q6600 does anyone have any other ideas??

Other then the new extension lead and heatsink everythign else is exactly the same, but the board wouldn't show a green light if the 4 pin cable was damaged should it??

Thanks for the help in advance

You could still get a light if there was an issue with the 4-pin 12V connection. I'm not sure on what the behaviour would be if that connection wasn't working though (the only time I've had it the machine would power on for a second or two then switch off).
Are you sure the power button switch is sitting correctly?
Other than that I'd unscrew the PSU and temporarily sit it outside the case so you can test the 4-pin connection directly (i.e. without using the extension)

You say that everything was working fine yet after taking everything out and putting it back in it doesn't?

As you're saying the board doesn't post, make sure you haven't shorted anything (might be underneath the motherboard) and also make sure you've wired the front panel connections right.

Even if your hardware is faulty, your computer should still be able to turn on unless you're PSU is dead which I assume it's not.

The power connections might also be slightly dodge so just wiggle them about a bit I guess.

On top of Vipers point about moving the PSU closer temporarily to see if its the cable.

I would try running the board on minimal components and working up from there.

Re: PC wont boot but motherboard shows power??

Thanks for your help guys, I still have had no luck but it looks like one of the capacitors near the heatsink is quite bent which I think is the culprit, when I mounted the scythe mugen 2 which was a extreme pain in the behind you had to flip the motherboard upside down and screw the heatsink in from underneath the board.

I think when I tried to flip the board and mount the heatsink the bracket for the mugen may have hit one of the capacitors (it's in such a awkward place).

I'm going to order another motherboard and see how that goes if not it's got to be the psu.

Turns out it was the motherboard I purchased a new one and it all booted up dandy although I did take a dremel to my motherboard tray to fit the new heatsink...

Re: PC wont boot but motherboard shows power??

I know you've found the isse but for anybody else reading i had a strange isse with my pc a while ago. i=I bought a new case and fitted everything. The pc wouldn't boot up for some reason and i spent ages trying to figure it out. I eventully found the problem - it was the usb cable. For some bizzare reason connecting the usb cable from the case to the usb header prevented it booting. Had to RMA the case unfortunately, but at least I found the issue.
