    Strange problem

Every so often, not all the time when I open FireFox it opens a new tab with a random page in it. For example William Hill, I have never been to the website, yet it opened the tab, has opened other random ones to.

I have virus scanned, spyware scanned and ad ware scanned the PC this morning, all come back clean!

    Anyone got any suggestions?

If your internet browser is opening up new tabs at random then its likely that you have malware on your computer. Start of by running SpyBot Search and Destroy to search for infections. You should also look into removeing sponsored P2P apps, such as Kazaa, or Bearshare, if you use them.

Nuke drive, fresh install of your OS.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Re: Strange problem

This is a fresh install of the OS and to be honest, im getting kinda fed up of hearing the same old same old, nuke the drive, nuke the drive. I like to test and exhaust all available posibilities before I "nuke" an OS.

It might be sophisticated malware and able to hide from scans. Have you tried downloading an av scanner that can be ran from a boot cd? Try and catch the app before it loads.

Try running something like cc cleaner to scan the registry and the start up programmes, clean all the crap from folders etc.

Could it be something thats installed as a firefox plugin? Can ff be loaded with out any plugins?

    Re: Strange problem

    Hmmmm....

    1) A pop up, being forced to open in a tab?
    2) A script/add-in/plug-in playing havoc with you FF setup
    3) Some real dodgy malware?

    Re: Strange problem

Well I gave the system a full scan with everything I have on the PC, three app's and this time it picked stuff up. But the same stuff wasnt picked up yesterday, doing the same scans, three times, so something isn't quite right.

I will give ccleaner a go, only thing I havent tried so far to be honest. Tomorrow i will boot into safe mode and scan the PC that way as well, see what, if anything it finds.

I dont think it is a pop-up per say Singh, its as if I have opened a web page in another tab..only i havent, but so far today, I havent had the problem.

Hmm will look at the plug in/ add ins I have for FF but I dont think I have any.

I thought it may have been malware, but I thought multiple app's would have found it..hmm.

@terb - My little rant above wasn't aimed at you and after reading my reply it may be seen that way. But it wasn't, was just a rant in general mate.

    Re: Strange problem

Can you start FF in "no add-ons mode". Just plain FF and nothing else. See if that does anything.

    Check out MSE out aswell.

    Re: Strange problem

Will do the FireFox thing in a second.
May well check out MSE, at the moment I have so much anti spyware/ adware stuff on this PC it's amazing.

Have just scanned with CC Cleaner and it appeared to return results for the usual stuff, temp files and the like, just about to run a search with SpyBot, will see what that throws up.

Firefox running in bog standard mode, may give the private browsing option a go and see what happens afterwards.

Well just scanned with Spybot and it returned no threats at all and the window hasnt popped up yet.

    Re: Strange problem

Well what a crock of rubbish that turned out to be.

Tried to boot into safe mode, system started loading as if it would load normally, then on the XP loading screen, went through twice, loading bar froze, blue screen flashed up then it circled round again, got stuck in a loop, so I am now formatting.

Was trying to get Win7 installed, but it wouldn't, so having to quick format with XP, then will upgrade to Win7 and see if I have any more luck with Win7 then I did with XP for this install! Never had so many problems with an install.

    Re: Strange problem

I have the same experience. I would just go to the tool option to change my default homepage back to what I initially set. everything is back to normal.
