Question Extend C: partition in Vista on the fly?

    I have C, D & E (on laptop)

C is too small, so I want to remove E and extend C, but I can't since it isn't contiguous with C - any ideas? Of course, no problem extending D.

Thought about copying contents of D (data, some progs) to external drive, then removing D, extending C, recreating D with remaining space....?

And, if that works, will the progs still work when contents are copied back to D?

    TIA
One can never stop saying Thank You

Re: Extend C: partition in Vista on the fly?

    Hi,

Why not delete E then extend D to take up all space, then reduce the D from the beginning/C boundary leaving the empty space for C to be extended into?

In fact, it should all be relatively straightforward. From the Vista Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Double Click Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management.

The mention about copying off files, while maybe not totally necessary,is always a good idea when doing any disk work. The easiest method would be to copy off what you cannot afford to loose. After that warning, I've done quite a few operations like this, with absolutely no problems.

    Good luck,

    Colin

I tried the expand D / then reduce D method before I posted, to make space between C & D, but have no idea how one can choose *where* to reduce the space............

i used EASUS partition manager today to tweak my partitions on my data drive, you use a slider to move the partition where on the drive you want it and can expand it the same way.
